This week at SIHA
Mrs. Ivry-Judaic Studies
The spirits are high as we approach the most exciting Holiday of Purim. The students are now familiar with the different characters in the story and know the Mitzvot we do on Purim day. They are eager to celebrate, listen to the Megila, wear their costume and of course eat some well deserved Hamantashen!
We spent some time making special Purim projects. Please do take the time when they get home for Purim to look at them and inquire about them as the students put a lot of efforts in making them.
And on top of that, we finished learning all of the Hebrew letters this week with the 2 Tavs that start words like Torah and Tapuach (apple).
Have a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Purim!

They also passed their reading test so nicely. They started learning a new vowel, the Koobootz which makes the sound "oo" so in the spirit of Purim, you could imagine the laughter that took place as the different letters were put together with that sound :)

We also created shape poems about the things we want to be when we grow up (like veterinarians, singers, and firemen).

The third graders are moving along quite nicely in Ivrit. This week we focused on the Purim story which was written entirely in Hebrew. The students had to translate each line on their own and were rewarded with tickets for each correct sentence that they translated into English. The Purim spirit is in the air. Everyone is so excited for the fun and exciting holiday. We began learning about the Purim story. We took a deeper look into each character and learned valuable life lessons that we can apply to our life.
Ms. Regina-ELA
This week, we focused on writing our essays for Rosa Parks and how she impacted society. We created a web together and were able to self-correct our essays using a checklist for capital letters, punctuation, spelling, and details. We discussed how if we can answer the questions of "How" and "Why" in our writing, then there is not enough detail in our paragraphs. Therefore, we need to add more. We also began preparing our background knowledge for our next book entitled "Moonshot". It is about Apollo 11 and the first moon landing with Neil Armstrong. We are very excited about it and have watched a few videos about the launch and saw the footage of Neil Armstrong landing on the moon. We also discussed his quote of "This is one small step for man, one large leap for mankind."

The 4th graders started a new Ivrit book this week. The students listened to Hebrew stories being read to them and then had to do many comprehension exercises. Students came up to the board to answer the questions based on the stories. Having an interactive lesson not only makes class more interesting but also allows students to learn from each other's mistakes. The Purim spirit is in the air. Everyone is so excited for the fun and exciting holiday. We began learning about the Purim story. We took a deeper look into each character and learned valuable life lessons that we can apply to our life. We had a group discussion on different character traits of a person such as haughtiness, greed, selflessness...etc. and how those traits can shape one's life. We also discussed Hashem's hidden "hand" in the Purim story and how it's most definitely in our life as well.

This week, we discussed two short stories and began outlining and essay to compare them. The stories discussed two types of birds and the struggles they face. We looked for verbs and adjectives in the story about the sparrow and highlighted them. We discussed the features of the story that were similar, but had its differences (ex. the conflicts). We also took our vocabulary test on the words from Island of the Blue Dolphins and collected the books.
