This week at SIHA.
Computers:
All grades began learning about computers and what we will be doing one they are received. Of course every grade will be doing different things such as typing for the younger grades and research for the older grades. The older grades will also be creating email and cloud accounts to assist them not only in preparing for the SS fair but also to assist them in their schooling as well.
Kindergarten:
Mrs. Ivry-Judiacs
Kindergartners learned the letters Mem and Mem Sofit and worked on their Hebrew spelling words. With kinesthetic spelling, jumping while spelling the words and then racing to write them down in the notebook, Kindergartners are making great progress with their Hebrew spelling and vocabulary.
Thank you all for the amazing Mitzvah notes that came in this week! It’s so nice to read the good things the students do and see their pride and excitement in sharing the special deeds! Mazal Tov to Kindergarten on their Mitzva Wall party and for Joshua Gluck for sending in the most Mitzva notes.

This week kindergarten had their first spelling test and they did amazing. They began reading the second story in the first grade reader. They have been practicing how to summarize the story in sequential order using the time oder words first, next, then, and last. They also learned how to write a letter and they wrote letters to their friends, siblings, or parents. In Social Studies they learned about mail carriers and they made small mailboxes to mail their letters to their friends in class.

This week kindergarten practiced filling in number bonds. They practiced subtracting to find the missing number in the number bond. They also learned how to use pictures to create an addition number bond and then they wrote the number sentence that represented the addition problem.
Ms. Syetta-Social Studies
This week kindergarten learned all about the community helpers nurse and mail carrier. Mrs. Kravchenko came into class and explained all about what nurses do, how important they are, and how they help doctors. She showed the class how a penlight works, how to use a thermometer, and she let each student use the stethoscope to listen to their heart, lungs, or stomach. She also taught the students how to find their pulse. In class we discussed the social studies fair and they each picked a community helper that they wanted to learn more about.

This week kindergarten learned all about what plants need to live. They created a book showing the five things plants need to live. They did an experiment to learn all about seeds. They learned to identify the parts of the seed and their purpose.
First Grade:
Mrs. Ivry-Judaics
First graders are mastering reading with the Sh’va which is a difficult vowel as it has many rules. The sound of the Sh’va is “I” as in “big” but it is silent in the middle or at the end of a word.
They passed their vocabulary test with flying colors and are getting ready to learn the next list of words: The 10 Makkot in Hebrew! They can also write in script letters up to the letter Kaf!
Please keep those Mitzvah notes coming. They really make the students feel special and proud of the good things they do each day.

We started a new unit "Numbers to 40". Kids are making counting by tens, adding on to tens and making tens. Arranging numbers to 40 in order, smallest to greatest and greatest to smallest. We completed word problems with addition and subtraction.

The first grade learned about the weather, forecasting, the four seasons and the various wather conditions while 2nd grade started learning about the human body mainly bones, joints and muscles and that their combined effort help us move.
Mrs. Perles-ELA and Social Studies
We had a blast working on our Social Studies Fair project. We cut all of our pictures and articles. Now we are almost ready to glue them onto our tri- folds.
Our composition this week was If I Were a King (or Queen). We described our castle, throne, crown, and many servants. We also told if we would be wicked or kind. However, the best part of the composition was seeing the cute stories that some of the children were writing showing that the class is truly becoming great writers.
In our Reader we read a non fiction story about insects. Of course, everyone had to tell about being stung by bees, wasps, and even spiders.
We are continuing writing our compound words and our ai, ea, and ee animals.
Second Grade:
Mrs. Spiegel-Judaics
We had a busy and exciting week as we learned Parsha Vaira which discusses the important trait of Hacarat Hatov.G-d told Moshe the water will turn into blood,but Aaron Moshe's older brother was commanded to hit the water with a stick which caused the water to turn into blood.The question is asked;why didn't Moshe hit the water.The answer is because Moshe had Hacarat Hatov which means being grateful,showing appreciation.Since Moshe was saved as a baby when he was in the box in the Nile River he had appreciation to the water for saving him.In class we discussed how we can show appreciation to people in our lives.Our vocabulary words this week are our family members and the 10 plagues which we can sing for you.We are becoming fast Hebrew readers and enjoy being timed and choosing cards as we practice our reading in class.Shabbat Shalom.

In second grade ELA, we just finished The Long Way to a New Land. We have begun to learn how to write our Social Studies composition. In Social studies we are studiously working on the Social Studies fair, learning about the three branches of government and the separation of powers. The students are in the midst of collecting their research for their trifold.
Ms. Regina-Literary Workshop
We discussed concrete poems, read many of them, and wrote or own poems using ice cream and a mitten. We also studied acrostic poems and wrote our own poems using our names and SIHA.

The students get called up to the board to try to figure out the English translations to the Hebrew words that are written. everyone enjoys the hands on interactive learning environment. This week the students learned Parshat Ve'era which speaks about the first 7 makkot (plagues) that the Mitzriyim (Egyptians) endured.

This week westarted off bymaking anew years project discussing our resolutions and personal goals for 2016. Then, we read A Cricket in Times Square, and studied the difference between similes and metaphors. We used songs and silly sentences to sort the two. We worked on finishing our opinion essays and reviewed our book reports.
Mrs. Shats-Math
Worked on multiplication and division of table 6,7,8 and 9. Completed word problems with multiplication and division. Used grid paper to illustrate the given equation. Had a timed quiz on multiplication of table 2,3,4 and 5.
Mr. I.-Science
We continued on the properties of matter such as reflectivity, malleability and magnetism. We also learned how to differentiate substances from elements.
Fourth Grade:
Mrs. K.-Judaics
The fourth grade had a big Ivrit review this week. The students were assigned to review many spelling and vocabulary words and to complete many assignments in Hebrew writing. Everyone did a great job on the review. We are starting a new chapter next week G-d willing. The fourth grade began learning Rashi letters (famous biblical commentator whose writing is a semi-cursive typeface for the Hebrew alphabet) With time the students will be able to read the actual text and understand its meaning. This week the students learned Parshat Ve'era which speaks about the first 7 makkot (plagues) that the Mitzriyim (Egyptians) endured. There are great lessons that we can take away from the Parsha. The class engaged in a discussion about the concept of "Hakarat Hatov" (Gratitude) and how we can apply it to our day to day life.

In fourth grade, we are learning how to write a persuasive essay. We are still reading Startgirl, and are focusing on new spelling and vocabulary words.

This week we discussed the concept of "Show, not tell" by rewriting simple sentences using details and descriptions. We made a concrete poem about the steps to building a snowman and continued our read aloud of "The First Day of School Forever" by R.L. Stine.

We continued our unit on matter differentiating various properties as well as talking about atoms and molecules. The class learned that the smallest unit of matter is the atom which molecules are composed of and millions, billions and even trillions of molecules compose the types of matter we see with our naked eye. They learned the difference between a substance and an element and how that's relevant to matter and the world around us.
Mr. I.-Social Studies
We studied the New England colonization mainly Jamestown and the Southern colonies. We learned about what a cash crop is and why tobacco was such an important cash crop in the south. We also started to study various supreme court cases for the SS fair. Students must bring in a mini-tri fold by 1/13 to get started on its decoration. We are examining various cases such as Brown vs Board of ED which ended US segregation, Miranda vs. Arizona and Dred Scott vs. Sanford just to name a few.

Fourth grade has successfully completed their unit on solving fraction applied problem solving and has moved on to apply that knowledge in basic unit conversions.
Fifth Grade:
Mr. I.-Science
We started on the various pathologies of the respiratory system such as the common cold, influenza and strep throat. We learned the difference between a self limiting disease and a non-self limiting disease, how to treat each one of the diseases and prevention methods for each.
Mr. I.-Social Studies
We are almost finished with studying the Fertile Crescent. Students learned of the Mesopotamian civilization that began in 4000BC. They learned that Mesopotamia lied in modern day Israel, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. Students were able to learn that irrigation, writing, record keeping, travel by wheel and many more modern technologies we use today were a result of Mesopotamian invention and innovations. We will be starting to examine the code of Hammurabi next week.
Mrs. Grodsky-ELA
This week, we began reading The Cay and analyzing the sentences to understand why the author used certain words and concepts. We played a vocabulary game where we had to guess the word order based on its synonym. We conferences about our essays and worked on our research papers about our given natural disaster. We are preparing for the state test using texts to help us differentiate between important and non-important information, as well as learning test taking tips on organizing our thoughts and summarizing paragraphs to be better able to find specific information.

Fifth grade completed their unit on area and perimeter of a triangle, parallelogram, rectangle, and composite figure and have started the next unit on ratios.
