This week we finished reading a story about a pig and all of the different activities she does on each day of the week. We wrote about our favorite day of the week and listed at least three reasons why it is our favorite day. We learned how to write a topic sentence in the beginning of our writing piece. We read a story about children using a map to see different types of animals. We also learned how to read and spell words with the consonant digraphs th and sh.
Ms. Syetta-Math
This week we reviewed fact families. We also learned how to answer addition and subtraction word problems. We practiced reading word problems without any numbers and we found the key words that helped us determine if we should add or subtract.
Ms. Syetta-Social Studies
This week we learned all about the difference between a map and a globe. We practiced identifying the land and the water on a map and on a globe. We learned what a continent is, the names of the 7 continents, the name of the continent we live on, and we learned a song to help us remember the names of the continents.
Mrs. Ivry-Judaic Studies
We finally heard the end of the story of Purim and we started learning about the different Mitzvot we do on Purim day. We can’t wait to listen to the Megilah (The Scroll of Esther) where the entire story of Purim is written. We will use our Gragger (Noise makers) when we hear the name of Haman. We should also celebrate with family and friends with a meal, music, costumes etc.
As we greeted the New month of Adar #2, we made special Hamantashen in honor of the Holiday of Purim (Please note that the Hamantashen are egg free and nut free) Instructions were sent to bake them at home. I hope you enjoyed them.
This week we mastered our right from our left and learned the letter Sin. We did a lot of hands-on projects to help us memorize the difference between the Shin and the Sin. We also practiced our vocabulary words and our Aleph Bet writing.
First Grade:
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we started to add and count on to one hundred. Adding on tens to given numbers. Writing out and drawing tens and ones for given numbers.
Mrs. Perles-ELA and Social Studies
We had a great week starting our next unit in social studies called the pioneers. In it we are learning about the desire to leave the city and move west and settle new land.
We read in our reader about African American inventors. We learned about the person who wrote the almanacs, who made the folding bed, planted peanuts and sweet potatoes, and found the machines to do cataract surgery. It was very interesting. If we only had a great idea.....
This week's composition was A Beautiful Spring Day due to the fantastic weather. We wrote about great times playing outside without jackets and eating ice cream. Cool.

We can’t believe what amazing readers we are becoming! We are now able to read a page in less than 60 seconds! We are so proud and looking forward to pass our test on Monday to move on to the next level
We started a new vocabulary list that is extra special because the words are all about Purim. We love it!
Mr. I.-Science
We studied the bones and muscles of the human body and how they help us move along with their other functions such as protecting our body and keeping our shape. We concluded with an experiment that tested muscle fatigue by asking a student to lift a 3 pound bucket. We formed questions and hypotheses about how many times the child can lift the bucket before he gets fatigued. Next week, we will study the skin and then the first grade will be tested on the human body.
Mr. I.-Computers
Typing games for kids to help them improve their familiarity with the keys and keyboard.
Second Grade:
Ms. May-ELA
This week in ELA the students studied their new vocabulary words stemming from Charlotte’s Web. They also answered reading comprehension questions depending on their assigned group to better understand the story and its literary elements (theme, characters, etc.), and to practice their reading strategies such as recalling information, making predictions, and differentiating between fact and opinion. They have been writing responses to their reading, and have had an easy time making text-to-self connections to the characters in CW. The second graders have also characterized Wilbur, Charlotte and Templeton by using graphic organizers with pictures of these characters, which they will ultimately turn into a Character Book upon the completion of their reading. I can definitely state that CW proves to be their favorite book thus far. The students have also begun incorporating their Spelling/Vocabulary words into creative stories. Lastly, they are busy preparing for our 1st Book Talk presentations by bringing in their chosen book for my approval which will take place on April 5th. I will be testing the students’ reading levels once again to show progress since the beginning of the year.
Ms. Regina-Literary Workshop
This week we worked on the Japanese art of haiku poems. We wrote some as a class about the beach and Lincoln Center. Then, we wrote our own, trying hard to stick to the pattern of a haiku poem. We discussed syllables and how to find them. We brainstormed everything we knew about each topic and tried to add as much detail as possible to our poems.
Ms. May-Social Studies
This week in SS the second graders had a surprise visit from former Senator Joe Lieberman’s daughter where they performed their SS Fair performance on The Three Branches of Government again! And they did great on the spot! They continue to present their Current Event articles and to learn about important news happening around the world. Our Current Event schedule will be changing next week in order to utilize the school’s computers. We will be aligning the schedule so that the students can research for articles in school, and print them from the accounts that Mr. I and I will be helping them to set up.
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we started a new unit on time. Telling time to the exact minute. Calculating elapsed time.
Mr. I.-Science
We held a review for the exam on 3/15. We reviewed structure and functions of organs like the brain, heart, lungs, skin and stomach as well as bones and joints. PowerPoint review was sent to all the parents as usual and the students really seemed to know their content.

This week we completed Rosa Parks! We acted out a play and took our test. We read our book reports and did very well on them. Ms. Regina is very proud of us! We played a fun review game and watched a video of Rosa Parks on "To Tell the Truth". It allowed us to listen to her speak and see how she acted, rather than just seeing her picture. At the end, we all guessed which Rosa was the real one and were so proud of ourselves! Since it is Women's History Month, we learned about many of the famous women that impacted society. We were each given a different woman to research. Next week, we will continue learning about new women and will end with a book of many popular women.
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we stared a unit on capacity. We measured liters and milliliters. Converted, added and subtracted liters with milliliters.
.
Mr. I.-Science
We studied the various types of bones as well as their structure and function. We then transitioned to muscles and talked about muscle fatigue. We conducted an experiment about muscle fatigue by asking a student to lift a five pound bucket until his muscles got tired. Johnathan was able to lift the bucket 20 times before his muscles got tired. The students hypothesized numbers from 5-15 times but at the end of their experiment we concluded their hypotheses were incorrect. This stems as a warm up scientific method application before the science fair.
Mr. I.-Computers

Mrs. K.-Judaic Studies
The third graders had a major Ivrit review this week. They converted English sentences into Hebrew and Hebrew sentences into English. The students are developing their Hebrew Language skills beautifully. Their "Dikduk" (Grammar) is getting better as well. We have several workbooks that we use in class as practice. The highlight of the week was making hamentashen in honor of "Rosh Chodesh Adar!" Each student took home a pan filled with delicious chocolate chip sprinkle hamentashen that he/she made.
