KINDERGARTEN
Mrs, Shats Math Enrichment
We worked on addition and subtraction word problems. Played games with adding and subtracting objects
Ms Regina Math, SS and Geography
This week has been all about word problems! We have not only been completing them, but have been creating them as well. We have completed our addition and subtraction books and brought them home to show everyone! We have also finally finished time! Now, we can not only read the schedule, but we know when the next subject is!
Geography
We decided to go through our folders and make sure we have everything for our geography book that we have been working on. We made a list of everything we are missing so we know what we need to make up during the week. We have a lot of things to show everyone at the end of the year!
Social Studies
We reviewed what librarians do and practiced identifying the parts of a book (title, author, spine, etc.) We are getting prepared for our big trip to the library on May 4!
Ms Syetta ELA and Science
This week we continued learning about the long a sound. We reviewed how to read, spell, and sort ai, ay, and a_e words by playing games. We also began learning how to read long i words by playing matching games. We are so excited that we finished our 4th first grade reader. We are becoming experts at retelling stories both orally and in writing. We created five finger retell gloves and retelling bracelets to help us remember the five elements we must include when retelling a story.
This week in Science we learned all about how animals move. We learned how animals in the sky have wings to help them fly, animals in the ocean have fins or flippers to help them swim, and animals on land have feet to help them walk. We began learning all about penguins.
Mrs Ivry Judaic Studies
The class is so busy practicing their Hebrew letters! They are getting ready for their big reading test that will take place next Wednesday. They started to work on their first vocabulary list! Kindergarteners are getting ready for first grade!
In this week's Parsha, we discussed the Mitzvah of the Brit Mila (circumcision) and not saying Lashon Harah ( gossip). We understand the extent to which it can hurt our friends to speak badly about it. We also learned to differentiate Lashon Harah from reporting dangerous or inappropriate behavior in order to help protect ourselves or our friends.
FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Perles ELA
The children came in all excited on Monday morning with their non fiction book report and sock puppet. I have to say that they were amazing! Each child read his report to the class showing his puppet proudly. Not only was it a wonderful learning exercise, it was also a fantastic time to show their confidence and pride in their work.
We wrote a composition on a trip to the emergency room. I read many interesting stories about stitches, broken arms and legs, and bad bumps and bruises. The class writes beautifully.
We have been working independently on our Flashforward books. We must read a paragraph and answer questions about the story. This book encourages the children to read and not guess. Most of the class are doing a great job.
In our grammar book, we are constantly reviewing nouns, verbs, and now adjectives. We write well and now we write grammatically correct.
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
Started a unit Numbers to 120. Counting, adding and subtracting tens and ones. Reading and writing numbers past 100. How many tens and ones make up a number.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we learned all about the desert. We learned what the weather is like, what animals live there, and how these animals are able to live in such a hot dry climate. We conducted an experiment using a sponge to learn how a cactus can live in the desert. We also began learning about the ocean.
Mrs Ivry Judaic Studies
First grade officially passed to the next stripe i their Yellow reader. They learnt a new vowel, the Cholam! THey can't wait to complete Yellow level!

SECOND GRADE
Ms. May ELA, SS and Geography
This week in ELA class we started off the week by working on a writing assignment; the students wrote two paragraphs, explaining how they celebrated Passover and how they spent the remainder of their break. We continued utilizing our writing juices by working on another assignment; the students had to create their first short story. However, prior to being assigned this task they had a two- day lesson on the Literary Elements (characters, conflict, setting, theme, resolution, etc)of a story. We had two winners for The Best Story Writer—Taylor Badalov and Emilia Boom! Let’s not forget our 2 time Student of ELA class—Elliott Agres!
We also learned how to write a Book Talk. This will be in substitute for writing a Book Report, and give our verbal and visual learners the opportunity to shine. Please see the rubric which is attached under the ELA HW section on Quickschools , as well as the handout that is in your child’s Reading Folder.
We also began reading our fifth trade book, The Courage of Sarah Noble, which seems to already be the class favorite. We have been busy answering questions in response to our shared reading which taps into many of the students’ reading abilities/ skills. Lastly, we have been working to remember the spelling of our new word list which compiles the U.S.’s most difficult-to-spell states! This is definitely a challenging list and therefore, vocabulary is not a worry this week! This word list ties nicely into our unit on the 50 states that we are learning about in Geography class.
In SS, we have started up with our Current Events, but after a rigorous lesson on How to Create the Best Current Events Presentation, the students have (as usual) rose to the occasion! What a difference I have seen in their work. Illuminating a student’s mind is the key to success. We have also begun to learn about our third historian, Pocahontas (finally, the girls are happyJ).
Geography
This week we learned about the state of New Jersey, we reviewed terms such as capital, population, etc, as well as directional points (S,E,N, W).
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
We finished our unit on Time. Worked on finding the time interval and problem solving with time.
Mrs. Spiegel Judaic & Hebrew Studies
We had an amazing week in second grade. The children were asked questions in hebrew and we are very proud to say that they understood the questions and some students were able to answer in hebrew as well.We are learning about the life of Rabbi Akiva,a great torah leader who started to learn how to read and write hebrew at age 40.(Its never too late to learn) He perservered and sat in on classes with young children to increase his knowledge. His dilligence paid off as he developed into one of the most respected Rabbis in our history.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we learned all about reptiles and amphibians. We compared and contrasted the characteristics of a reptile and an amphibian to help us learn how to tell the difference between the two species.
THIRD GRADE
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
Worked on word problems with time. Adding and subtracting time. Understanding length of time. Converting time, days , weeks, months and years.
Mrs. Khukhashvili Judaic & Hebrew Studies
The 3rd grade took their Pesach test this week. They had a chance to correct their mistakes in order to receive a better grade. We learned about "Sfirat Ha'omer" which is the counting of the days between the 2nd night of Pesach until Shavuot (Holiday that we celebrate the receiving of the Torah). Just like a child would count the days leading up to an exciting day in their life (such as a birthday), the Jewish people count the days leading up to Shavuot. The Day G-d gave us the biggest gift of all which is the Torah. We learned about Rabbi Akiva and his talmidim (students) who were punished for not doing the Mitzvah of "viahavta larecha kamocha" (loving your friend like yourself) properly. We discussed the concept of bettering ourselves and always reaching for great heights in all areas in our lives.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we learned all about how animals are adapted to help them live in their environment. We compared and contrasted a blue jay and a penguin to help us understand that even though they are both birds they have different external features to help them survive in their environment. We conducted experiments with feathers to learn how their feathers keep birds warm and dry.
Ms Landa SS and ELA
In honor of Disabilities Awareness, this week in ELA, we began reading two texts. Group A is voraciously devouring a novel about a young girl with Cerebral Palsy. Entitled Out of my Mind by Sharon Draper, the novel is about an intelligent girl named Melody with CP who cannot speak. Group B is excitedly racing to read a graphic memoir entitled El Deafo. The main character (and author) is a young girl named Cece Bell who goes deaf after a severe bout of meningitis. Both novels are an excellent way to learn about tolerance, acceptance, and respect for others. In Social Studies this week, we have reviewed the skill of summarizing informational articles. Moving forward, their weekly current events assignments should be properly summarized, including all the '5 w's' and an opinion about what they've read. We've also watched an emotional video clip about the birth and rise of our beautiful homeland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voO3DXnPc-U
FOURTH GRADE
Mrs. Khukhashvili Judaic & Hebrew Studies
The fourth grade learned about "Sfirat Ha'omer" which is the counting of the days between the 2nd night of Pesach until Shavuot (Holiday that we celebrate the receiving of the Torah). Just like a child would count the days leading up to an exciting day in their life (such as a birthday), the Jewish people count the days leading up to Shavuot. We discussed the concept of bettering ourselves and always reaching for great heights in all areas in our lives.
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
We worked on identifying angles such as acute, obtuse and right angle. Measuring angles with a protractor.
Mrs Uzhansky Math
This week the fourth grade finished learning how to divide a number of up to 2-decimals by a 1-digit whole number using algorithm where decimal places have to be added to the dividend. The fourth grade also learned how to round the quotient to one decimal place (tenths place). Next week we will be moving on to a new unit, geometry. Please make sure your child has a protractor.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we continued to learn about the three types of consumers. We learned that we can tell the difference between a carnivore, a herbivore, and an omnivore by looking at their teeth, eyes, and feet. We played games to learn what type of consumer each animal is and where they would be in the food chain.
Ms Landa ELA and SS
This week we have continued reading the Liberation of Gabriel King. The book's central themes are overcoming personal fears and racism. In preparation for the state ELA exam, to determine where the students may need extra help, they have also taken an old state ELA exam from 2006. In SS, we have been discovering how our constitution was created and the specifics it entails. In doing so, we have discussed the three branches of government and the system of checks and balances that are in place to assure our system of government. We too watched an emotional video clip about the birth and rise of our beautiful homeland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voO3DXnPc-U
