Our trip to the Staten Island Museum:
Kindergarten:
Ms. Syetta-ELA
This week kindergarten finished reading a story about how an ox can help people and other animals. They began reading a nonfiction story about a fox and her kit. They became the kings of ing, as they mastered reading and spelling words that end with the letters ing. They also wrote a persuasive letter to their parents to ask for a pet. They explained why it is the best pet to have and how they would take care of the pet.

This week kindergarten continued making their own addition books. They used dominoes to practice adding. They drew pictures of red and blue fish and added how many fish they had altogether. They added pennies in piggy banks. They flipped pennies, counted how many heads and tails they got, and then added how many heads they had plus how many tails they had.
Ms. Syetta-Social Studies
This week kindergarten learned about Dr. Martin Luther King. They wrote how they could be a good friend and about a dream they have, like Dr. Martin Luther king, that could help change the word. They also continued working on their projects for the social studies fair.
We are all King of ing!

We conducted a review on our Matter unit. Everything from what matter is to the various phases of matter to changing states of matter. Children and their parents received review lessons and review sheet and we will have an exam after the recess.
Mrs. Perles-ELA
We started our new second grade reader. It was awesome! The first story was about being nervous on the first day of school. We all told our experiences of being scared or excited.
Then we wrote a How To... composition about how you make a cake, pizza, pancakes, or anything that you watch or help your mother make. They all wrote very well describing the steps of buying the ingredients, then what you do with them, and finally sitting down to eat it. Sounded delicious.
We completed Our Compound Book and started our final book called Our Homonym Book. The children are coming up with many ideas like blue and blew, or sun and son. We certainly enjoy learning in first grade.
Second Grade:
Mrs. Speigel-Judaic Studies
We had another wonderful week as we are busy preparing for our upcoming Siddur Presentation.We can't wait to see you all on February 4th at 9:30 a.m. We know how to say the names of many family members in Hebrew,we drew pictures and labeled all the members of our family in Hebrew. This Shabbat is called Shabbat Shira.The Jews sang a song of praise to G-D for redeeming them out of Egypt and having the Red Sea split open in 12 tunnels,one for each tribe as they crossed through the Red Sea.Enjoy the school break.Shabbat Shalom

This week we practiced multiplication and division with the four times table. Completed word problems with multiplication and division as well as making our own word problems.
Ms. May-ELA
This week in ELA the students worked on perfecting their compositions. They also wrote their first draft of their creative short stories. Receiving Spelling/Vocabulary words will resume on the Monday that we return from our Winter break.
Ms. May-Social Studies
This week in SS we worked on creating our tri-folds and understanding how each branch of government plays a role in maintaining a balance in the United States. We also worked on understanding how each of its powers also help in delegating who is in charge of which these important factors. We will also resume with Current Events.
Mr. I.-Science

Third Grade:
Ms. Regina-ELA
This has been a very exciting week in third grade ELA class! On Monday, we learned all about Martin Luther King, Jr. We watched a Kid President video about the ways he helped our country with freedom and equality. Then, we had a huge debate about which statements were "just" or "unjust". We also discussed the three types of conflict in and finished The Cricket in Times Square. The students were so attached to the main character that one actually began to tear up at the end!
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we started unit on length. We measured objects around the room as well as ourselves with centimeters and meters. We converted centimeters to meters and meters to centimeters.
Mr. I.-Science
We reviewed our Matter unit from its definition to its various phases. We reviewed properties of matter such as transparency, magnetism, reflectivity, malleability and density. We reviewed substances and elements, how we can tell two apart and the various examples. Lastly, we discussed the density formula which is mass/volume. We will be taking an exam when we return from break
Third Grade wrote beautiful compositions about Tu' B'shvat in Judaics class.

Ms. May-ELA
This week the students finished writing their final Persuasive essays. We also finished reading our 2nd trade book, Stargirl. We characterized its main characters and learned many new vocabulary words. We will resume with our weekly Vocabulary/Spelling words when we return from our break. We practiced the parts of speech in a Mad Lib exercise. Lastly, we learned about “double negatives” and how they are not meant to be placed in our sentences!

Fourth grade started learning about decimals and their place value and parts of one whole in decimals.

We conducted a review lesson on the early American colonization. We discussed New Spain and New England by stating differences and similarities between each colonization from conception to ideals to geographic locations. We will be taking a test on this shortly after the break.

Students continued their SS fair work from working on their papers to printing pictures and starting their tri-fold board presentations.
Fourth Grade wrote beautiful compositions about Tu' B'shvat in Judaics class.
Fifth Grade:
Mrs. Uzhansky-Math
Fifth grade reviewed decimal place value through the thousandths place and began decimal operations.
Mr. I.-Science
We are finishing up our unit on the respiratory system. We are closing up the various pathologies by differentiating them, comparing and contrasting them. On Wednesday, the fifth grade looked at an article on timesofisrael.com about how an Israeli made pocket BVM (Bag Valve mask) is saving lives of American soliders at war and is now put on all EL AL jets to supply passengers with oxygen when they are in need. We will continue to review the respiratory system before we take a test on it soon after we return from break.
Mr. I.-Social Studies
We reviewed chapter 5 on the Mesopotamian civilization by answering review questions from the textbook. Students got a chance to work individually and as a group on the ones we did together in class.
