Second Grade:
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we continued to work on money. Counting, counting up to make a certain amount and subtracting money.
Ms. May-ELA and Social Studies
For the past two weeks the 2nd graders have been learning the difference between the commonly mistaken phrases, “How much” and “How many”, and when to use them. They learned to use “much” when dealing with “Uncountable nouns” (nouns you cannot count like ‘furniture’) and to use “many” when dealing with “Countable nouns” ( nouns you can count like ‘pieces of furniture’). Slowly, they are realizing when to use the correct word in their daily speaking and writing. They have also learned how to write Roman Numerals #I-X so that they can read the Table of Contents in their new trade book, Charlotte’s Web which they are excited to read along with me this year. They have been given a new list of words that are stemmed from our readings. I want to congratulate the children on doing an amazing job at the Social Studies Fair, from learning the ultra fast song that I chose, to dressing in such creative outfits to resemble tree branches. But most importantly, for being so resilient in the face of a challenge with having to change our original positioning on stage to having audio difficulties, they rose to the occasion and that in itself is a testimony to their ability to mature into well-rounded children.
Mr. I.-Science
We continued studying the human body getting into the digestive system and its organs such as the stomach. We will conclude by studying the skin next week.

We had another exciting week in second grade as we began learning the
Purim story. The children know that if this year was not a leap year Purim would have been celebrated this past Tuesday Feb.23 which was the 14th day of Adar 1.Being there are two months of Adar we celebrate Purim the 14th day of Adar 2 which is Thursday March 24.We are practicing our reading skills daily. We enjoyed coloring in our Brachot/picture place mats which we hope to bring home next week.We learned about the Moshe our leader coming down from Mt.Sinai with the 10 commandments and the erection of the Golden Calf.A census of Jewish men was taken, each man was required to contribute a coin valued at one half shekel. The coins were then counted and the total indicated how many men were counted. Why did have to donate only half a shekel, rather than a whole one?Why not have each individual show he is whole and complete? This is to emphasize the fact that no individual is complete when alone. No person is an island. One can only reach great heights by associating and cooperating with others. If he goes out of his way to help others and to join in positive group efforts then he is a true member of the Jewish nation. In our class at SIHA we are all a family.I am so impressed when I see how the students care about and help each other, and how they all worked together so well when preparing for the Siddur Play. Shabbat Shalom.
Our Shabbat Party.

Third Grade:
Mrs. K.-Judaic Studies
It was so great to be back this week. I missed the students very much and I'm looking forward to teaching them again. This week we had a big Hebrew Language review. The students had many writing and reading assignments as well as practice questions on different fundamental grammar rules. The 3rd graders did a great job translating the Hebrew story titled "Ha'mishpacha Sheli". The students learned to break the sentences apart into words and to try to identify the "shoresh" (root word), Prefix and suffix in it. We are going to finish reading the story next week. This week's Parsha (Torah Portion) is Parsha Ki'sisa". It talks about how the Jews sinned with the golden calf. We had a class discussion on forgiveness and the love that Hashem has for us.
Ms. Regina-ELA
This week we read Rosa Parks: My Story and finally got to the bus boycott and her refusing the get out of her seat. We acted out many situations that helped the students really understand how blacks were treated during this time, especially on buses. We acted out where the assigned seats were, the court cases presented, and began practicing for a small play to be performed in class. The students also received their book report assignments and are excited to get started. It is very different than the others and they are showing extreme interest. In addition, we have been practicing our cursive and have been getting much better. Now, when Ms. Regina writes in cursive on the board, we really understand what it says! Finally, the State Tests and fast approaching, so we have been doing intense prep with our Reading Tests booklet. The students are doing very well.
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we started a unit on weight. We solved word problems, compared weight, added and subtracted kilograms and grams.
Mr. I.-Science
We listed and discussed the 9 systems of the body. This was a continuing lesson from our last one when we discussed the hierarchy of the body (cells, tissues, organs, systems, organism). We will be discussing each systems vital organs next week.
Mr. I.-Computers
Grades 1-3 concluded their unit on using the mouse, coordinating and navigating around the screen. Grades 4 and 5 used their time to finish what they needed to do for SS fair. Fourth Grade:
Mrs. K.-Judaic Studies
It was so great to be back this week. I missed the students very much and I'm looking forward to teaching them again. This week was packed with learning and reviewing. The fourth graders had an independent Hebrew writing assignment where they had to listen to a story being read and write down what they heard. Although it was challenging to figure out the spelling of each word as well as its definition, the students managed to do quite well. Their Hebrew language skills are improving drastically and they're more confident in their ability to do well on exams. the Hebrew language is becoming less and less intimidating. The students are able to read a Hebrew story and translate most of it by identifying the "shoresh" (root word), prefix and suffix. We are almost ready to conclude our "Hakdama li' tiffila" (Introduction to Prayer) and delve into the holy prayer of "Shimoneh Esrei". This week we discussed "Zchut Avot" (Merits of our forefathers) and how we as a nation are privileged to be "related" to them. Hashem remembers their greatness and showers us with goodness although at times we don't deserve it. This week's Parsha (Torah Portion) is Parsha Ki'sisa". It talks about how the Jews sinned with the golden calf. We had a class discussion on forgiveness and the love that Hashem has for us.
Ms. May-ELA
For the past two weeks in 4th grade, the students continue to read Holes. They have been characterizing the main character, Stanley and finding proof to support those traits. They learned how to write both a Business Letter and a Friendly Letter and the difference between the, focusing on their intended audience. The 4th graders have been working on their On My Honor creative project, with choices ranging from drawing abstract art work, depicting one of the themed words in the book -to writing a last chapter of On My Honor, and I am looking forward to seeing them on Monday. These projects will be displayed on their class bulletin. They also learned how to do a Book Talk, and will be presenting them for the first time at the end of next month. The 4th graders have also been learning the spelling and vocabulary of their new words. They have been introduced to Irregular verbs and have been practicing the past participle verb tense to improve upon their writing ability. Lastly, they had a chance to write some creative writing samples in responding to their new trade book.
Ms. Regina-Literary Workshop
This week we had a writing prompt about hearing a rumbling sound in our room and finding something under our bed in the middle of the night. We became very creative. Even Ms. Regina wrote a story with us! We worked on adding details and taking out what is not necessary in our stories. We read them aloud and enjoyed listening to each other's work with respect. Finally, we finished our read aloud novel The First Day of School Forever. It was so crazy! It really had a twist of an ending! We began another book called There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom. We love finishing class with a read aloud and always want to hear more.
Mr. I.-Science
We discussed the nine systems of the body and the vital organs in each one and how it helps keep us alive.
Mr. I.-Social Studies

This week we worked on reading aloud with "umph" and enthusiasm. We discussed "vividability", chose specific parts from the book that we felt were extremely descriptive, and how we can incorporate that type of description into our writing. We practiced with packets for the fast approaching state tests and are able to explain our answers and how we support them. We also discussed the character traits of Karana in Island of the Blue Dolphins and played a vocabulary matching game.
Mr. I.-Science
We discussed the various pathologies of the skeletal system, various types of sprains and fractures. Students are very interested in this and can even tell by looking at xray photos, which part of the body we are looking at. Excellent training for our future doctors.
