This week at SIHA!
Kindergarten:
Mrs. Ivry-Judaic Studies
It was so exciting to be back in school. Students shared with the class their favorite vacation activity. But they couldn't wait to receive their Red Champ Readers! This week we learned the letters samech and ayin. We learned the words "sidur" (prayer book), ayin (eye) and etz (tree).
We learned the bracha Mezonot that we recite before eating any food made with one of the five cereals . But that is not bread.
In Parsha we learned the story of the mountains' argument when they were getting ready to receive the Torah and how Hashem loves when we act with modesty and we do not brag. We alsoblearned different Mitzvot such as not throughing garbage on the floor, saying the truth, separating meat and dairy and returning a lost object.

This week kindergarten read a story about two children finding eggs in a nest. The students learned how to fill in a graphic organizer to summarize the elements of the story. They finished writing their letters about what type of pet they want to have and they worked hard to come up with ways to persuade someone to buy them their favorite pet. They created a King of Ing booklet and played games to practice reading words with the short e sound.
Ms. Syetta-Math
This week kindergarten finished their addition books. The discovered the different ways they can make 5 and 10. They put 5 or 10 colorful counters in a cup, shook the cup, spilled the counters out of the container, and counted how many they had of each color. They began practicing subtraction and they learned how to subtract by using a number line.
Ms. Syetta-Social Studies
This week kindergarten worked on their Social Studies Fair projects. They are creating their tri-folds and writing a summary about their community helper.
Ms. Syetta-Science
This week kindergarten continued to learn the parts of a plant by creating an art project showing the roots, stem, leaf, flower, and seeds of a plant.

1st 2nd and 3rd took science tests on matter and the water cycle while the fourth grade held reviews for a science test next week. The fifth grade took a science test on the respiratory system and seemed to grasp the content very well. They were interested and even more so when Mr Krasnov came in to do a live presentation on the respiratory system and its various pathologies. We will study the skeletal system next.
Mrs. Perles-ELA and Social Studies
It really was great getting back to learning after our winter vacation. We loved telling about what we did, where we went, and who we saw. However, everyone agreed it was nice to be back.
We read a non fiction story of how it was living on a farm long ago and how it is today. It was very interesting, but we love our fiction stories better.
We wrote a fabulous composition about our best friend. We were asked to describe him or her, why you like him, and tell something you do together. They were awesome. We even gave them to Mrs. U to read.
We started reading Charlotte's Web and we love it.
REMINDER---- Our Social Studies report is due on Monday.
Second Grade:
Mrs. Shats-Math
Worked on multiplication and division of tables 4,5 and 10. Completed word problems with multiplication and division.

This week in 2nd grade the students began discussing the theme of courage and wrote about the scariest thing that they have ever had to face, and how they overcame it by being courageous, which ties into the new trade book that we started reading, The Courage of Sarah Noble. They received a new list of Spelling/Vocabulary words which have been pulled from the trade book. They also had an enjoyable time practicing writing two paragraph stories by explaining how they spent their winter break, which each student had a chance to share with the class.
Ms. May-Social Studies
In Social Studies the 2nd graders are diligently working on learning their lines for their SS Fair song. I have a feeling it's going to be a memorable performance! Current Events is back for this week, and the students will be presenting their articles this coming Monday. They have finished their tri-folds and I will begin grading them along with their compositions.

We have been doing so much this week with The Cricket in Times Square. We completed our file folder activity as a review for the test we had on Thursday. Inside, it has examples of character traits, theme, types of conflicts, and so much more! We were able to design it and make it colorful. We have been working on these file folders since we began reading the book. We are so happy they are done! In addition to the file folders, we are also finishing up two essays about The Cricket in Times Square - one about character traits and one about comparing the movie to the book. We also have been doing some background information for our new book, Rosa Parks: My Story. We will be learning about her life and reading about how she was a influential in the civil rights movement. (If you notice, she is the reason our extra credit word is 'influential'.)
Fourth Grade:
Ms. May-ELA
This week in 4th grade, the students began reading their 3rd trade book, On My Honor and resumed receiving their Spelling/Vocabulary words. We practiced characterizing the two main characters by citing evidence from the trade book to support these traits. They were also introduced to the Present Perfect, Past Perfect and Future Perfect tenses, the Past Progressive, Present Progressive and Future Progressive Tenses, and finally, the Present Perfect Progressive, Past Perfect Progressive and Future Perfect Progressive (say that three times fast!). They were in awe of the different ways they could construct their sentences, using these unfamiliar verb tenses, and expectantly- confused; but with practice, will come perfection.
Lastly, the students learned about transitional words and phrases, and when to place a comma in their writing. They had a mini- writing contest to see which student could write the best letter or story; there task was to explain to a robot what steps they would need to take in order to get ready for school WITHOUT using the common, redundant words such as: 'but','then' and 'next'! Instead, they had to replace these words with the new transitional words that they learned. Congratulations to Jacob G for coming in 1st place and Pazi O coming in 2nd place- they both wrote interesting stories with a plethora of new transitional words.
Ms. Regina-Literary Workshop
In fourth grade, we began working on our personal narratives. We chose a 'snaphsot' of our lives to write in a paper. We will be using details and descriptions to make it as interesting as possible.

Fourth grade used their SS time to continue their tri fold presentation boards on their court cases and theyre coming out awesome. Theyre doing famous supreme court cases and its a pleasure to see how much theyre learning about not only their specific case but all the cases collectively. The fifth grade used their SS time to review chapter 5 for an exam next week and used their time to work on their tri folds for their presidential candidates. Its amazing how much theyre learning and even teaching me about their policies. They watch the debates, research their candidates and even practice their demeanor. Alan is trying to make a mean Ted Cruz talking like a southerner. Computer time was also used to work on SS fair presentations including editing the papers, boards and doing additional research.
Mrs. Uzhansky-Math
We completed our unit on decimal place value, value, and conversion of decimals into fractions and vice versa with denominators that are factors of 10, 100, or 1,000.
Fifth Grade:
Mrs. Grodsky-ELA
This week students in the fifth grade concentrated on creative writing and thinking in addition to preparing to CCST and learning grammar. They have discussed voice shifts and tense shifts which still occur in their writing regularly. The students have participated in a mini-debate on the topic of "A Title of a Story/Essay Should Be Written Before Writing itself." At the same time they understood how at times they have to do not only what they like but rather to look for important and positive in something they dislike.
In preparation to the new book, we have looked at the map of the island on which the story of "Island of the Blue Dolfins" took place and predicted what the reason for the title may be. Additionally, we have listened to Robert Bold Eagle tell us about the Aleuts tribe and how Native Americans lived, stored food and traveled in mid 1800s. Good Shabbos.

We completed our review of decimal place value, value, and conversions of decimals into fractions and vice versa. Next week we will continue with applying decimals into the four mathematical operations.
