This week kindergarten has been writing amazing sentences. We learned how to write a sentence using capitals, periods, and how to put spaces in between our words. We learned the difference between fiction and non-fiction books and we began writing our first personal narrative.

This week kindergarten learned all about addition and how to make number bonds. We have been using all different items in the room to practice adding, such as our blocks, cubes, and even our toys.

This week kindergarten learned the difference between the Navy, the Army, the Air Force, the Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard. We learned all about what it means to be a veteran. We created mini-books and wrote thank you letters that were given to veterans.

This week we learned all about the four seasons. We decorated pictures of trees to represent how the trees look in each season. We discussed what happened to the leaves in the fall, we observed leaves, and we drew pictures of the leaves.
First Grade

What an awesome week! We started our fourth Reader learning long vowels, the silent e and double vowels. The stories are getting longer and more interesting.
We wrote a wonderful composition about our birthday party. The class used descriptive details making their composition interesting and exciting.
We started learning about the Thanksgiving story. The children loved learning about the Pilgrims.
At the end of everyday , we read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This week we finished the whole book. We loved it!

Topic - Numbers to 20
Students solved a lot of equations that add up to 20. with the use of mental math and speed math. Adding a smaller number to a bigger number ( reversing the equation if needed). Completing equations with missing addends. Comparing numbers and equations with a greater than, less than or equal sign. Worked on and completed many word problems.

This week we studied the 5 senses and how humans use them. We described Popcorn using the 5 senses and the students came up with some great descriptions.
Second Grade
Ms. May - ELA & SS
This week the 2nd graders worked on writing their first Literary Letters, and were introduced to the Literary Elements of a story, challenging the students to incorporate the Reading Strategies (what good readers do while reading) :Making predictions, visualizations, asking questions, and as a challenge, more advanced students were asked to make connections (text-to-self, text-to-world and text-to-text connections) while reading and writing. The students also learned what a writing draft is and how the messier the draft, the better work they will produce. We learned our 5th list of vocabulary words which stem from our reading the 3rd tradebook, The Keeping Quilt as well as from our class lessons. Lastly, we learned the spelling of words that are so challenging that our parents had to think twice about spelling during our Parent Spelling Bee! I am proud to announce that the 2nd graders are rising to the occasion, and putting forth much effort in being conscientious writers in order to work on their individualized writing goals.
In Social Studies we learned about Christopher Columbus’s journey and the importance of his legacy, and the story of Pocahontas.

Students were taught how to comparing weight and understand different scale intervals. Kids learned the difference between kilograms and grams and pounds and ounces.

This week in second grade, the students are working on opinion essays. We discussed what an opinion is and how we need reasons to back up that opinion using the question "Why". We created a web on the board listing reasons why we enjoyed listening to the book Junie B. Jones and the Stupid, Smelly School Bus. The students came up with wonderful ideas and examples from the book. We created an outline on loose-leaf and will be writing the complete essay next week using that outline.

We had an exciting and full week in Judaic studies this week.We learned many new vocabulary words.Some of the words are displayed on the bulletin board.The children drew pictures of a Shabbat theme and labeled the pictures in hebrew. We learned all about Shabbat and l look forward to experiencing Shabbat with some of you and your children this weekend.We learned about Parsha Told or which is the Total portion of the week.We know how Esav was so careful about honoring his parents.We spoke about how we can honor our parents.

Students added and subtracted four digit numbers with and without renaming. Kids solved word problems using bar models, equations and sentence answers.

This week we studied living things/non-living things and the life cycle of a plant. Students learned how seeds germinate and what causes the growth of plants. They learned about the functions of pollen and how its transported. Their efforts are truly immense and their grasp of the material is fantastic as well.

This week in third grade we finished with our Ramona Quimby, Age 8 study! We completed our "Ramona and I" comparison essays making sure to use our writing goals to enhance our knowledge of vocabulary, grammar rules, and spelling patterns. We began with a Multiple Paragraph Outline to get our thoughts on to paper. We then took those ideas and put them into paragraphs to revise for our final draft, which was put in our writing portfolios. We also learned about veterans, Veteran's Day, and why it is so important to honor a veteran. Almost all of the students were able to speak about someone in their family who is a veteran.

This week was "Shabbat Week!" The students had a lot of kria (reading) practice. We practiced reading different Shabbat tifilot (prayers) and sang many Shabbat songs. The students are looking forward to putting everything they learned about Shabbat into practice this weekend. The 3rd graders were also very busy learning Hebrew grammar. They do many different grammar exercises in their workbooks.
Fourth Grade

This week the 4th graders worked on writing their first Literary Letters, and were reminded of the Literary Elements of a story, incorporating the reading strategies: Making predictions, visualizations, asking questions, and making connections (text-to-self, text-to-world and text-to-text connections) while reading and writing. They practiced the writing process (brain storming, drafting, editing, conferencing and rewriting) to become skillful writers, making sure to include facts to support their opinions, while expressing their opinions to engage their audience. They learned how conferencing with both teacher and classmates (peer editing) is an essential role in the writing process which ultimately offers them a chance to reflect on their writing. The 4th graders also learned how to take part in a Literature Circle where each student works together in a group to carry out specific assigned roles (Researcher, Recorder and Presenter) to not only achieve their goals, but to do so as a team. They learned their Spelling and Vocabulary word list #5 stemming from their first tradebook, Wonder. The 4th graders are thoroughly enjoying this book and are excited to read the second half of it.

We studied the first Americans as well as the first European explorers. We also dedicated 10 minutes of the class period on Veterans day to give acknowledgement to all the veterans who have put their lives on the line defending their respective countries.

We are going to study what weathering and erosion are as well as differentiate their effects on planet Earth. From there we are going to study the Earths four spheres (Geo-sphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere) and differentiate them as well.

The 4th graders were very busy this week learning about Shabbat. Excitement was felt in the air as days were getting closer to the shabbaton.
This week we learned another Passuk in the chumash. The students are learning to break the words apart in order to figure out its translation. They look at the prefixes, the shoreshim (root words), and the suffixes to determine what the passuk is trying to say.

This week in fourth grade, we spoke about veterans and how important they are. Some students were able to tell stories about their family members who are veterans. The students were then given two writing prompts. One was a letter to a veteran thanking them for their service and inquiring about their lives. (What do you do now that you are no longer in the service? How do you help other veterans? What was it like in the service?) The other prompt was to write an acrostic poem with the word "Veterans". The students were able to come up with wonderful adjectives and descriptions to create this poem. The assignments that were re-written neatly and decorated nicely will be sent to a Veteran Hospital or Clinic. We are hoping that some of the letters may even be answered!
Fifth Grade

We finished our unit on the Digestive system and took an exam on Monday where students scores averaged out to 101. A very proud moment for any teacher. We also started our unit on the Excretory System.

We continued our unit on world climates and resources. Students continue to learn about our worldly surroundings and how each region in the world utilizes what they have to work with be it resources, climate, environment, etc.

This week fifth grade reviewed multistep problem solving with thru bar modeling. We also began reviewing fraction operations.
