This week at SIHA!
Computers for all grades-Mr. I.
The fifth grade continued to type their ELA work while the fourth grade completed letters to their families (some were beautiful by the way). The First and third grade continue to strengthen their typing skills and fine motor skills respectively. The second grade did not have computers this week due to Lag B'omer trip to Bloomingdale park.
Kindergarten:
Ms. Syetta-ELA
This week we continued to learn all about adjectives. We described items using adjectives and including as many adjectives as we could into our writing. We read a story about a girl and her friends that drew pictures for show and tell. We were able to find many adjectives in the story all by ourselves. We learned how to read and write words with y at the end of a word and we learned a trick to help us read these words. We also learned how to make mental images when listening to poetry.
Ms. Syetta-Math
This week we learned how to measure using non-standard tools. We measured various objects and made conclusions based on our measurements. We learned that the size of the object we use to measure items is important.
Ms. Syetta-Science
This week we continued to watch our caterpillars and we are so amazed by how fast they grew this week! We carefully observed the caterpillars and continued to record our observations and discussed their life cycle. We are so excited that almost all of the caterpillars have made a chrysalises. We can't wait for them to become butterflies.
First Grade:

Held a review session on animals and habitats. Review slides were sent to all parents and the kids really know their stuff!
Second Grade:
Mrs. Spiegel-Judaic Studies
Blog,we had another exciting week in 2nd grade as we learned some of the basic prefixes of the Hebrew language.In Parshat Behar we learned
about the shmita year.The land is not worked on every 7th year.This is done today in Israel as this past year shmita was observed by Torah abiding farmers in Israel.We also learned that we must be careful not to say hurtful words (Onas divorim)we must try not to insult anyone or call anyone a name as that can be painful.We learned about the reason we celebrate Lag Bomer which was yesterday and we enjoyed all the activities and being at the park in honor of a Lag Bomer.Shabbat

This week in second grade ELA the students began reading their final trade book, Ramona Quimby They are very much enjoying the adventures that Ramona experiences at being age 8. They learned their new words for Ramona Quimby and took their first Spelling/Vocabulary test since our break from receiving new words. The students also finished writing their compare and contrast compositions, comparing the book, Charlotte's Web to the movie. Congrats to Ariella S. and Michael B. for doing such a nice job on their Memoir writing from last week and having the chance to share them with their class. Lastly, the second graders have been choosing their books for their final Book Talks that they will present on May 31st.
Ms. Regina-Literary Workshop
This week, we worked on a writing piece about whatifs. Our topic was "What if a tiger came out of the woods during the relay races?" We came up with some very interesting ideas! We also continued our read aloud about the shark attacks in 1918.

Third Grade:
Mrs. K.-Judaic Studies
This week the third graders learned about Lag B'omer and the significance of the day. We spoke about Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai who were one of the greatest Torah giants that ever lived. We learned how Lag B'omer is celebrated in Meron ( where Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai is buried) which is located in Israel and how the Jews gather together to celebrate there.
Ms. Regina-ELA
This week was dedicated to working on our family books for the Author's Tea. We wrote all about our traditions and were able to expand our writing and details. We also began a read aloud book entitled "Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire." It is a very funny book about a girl who always lies, but learns she doesn't have to.
Mr. I.-Science
We held a review session of animals/habitats and the key vocabulary associated with the unit. Since next Weds is discovery day, we will have an exam the following week. Review sheet to come next week.
Fourth Grade:
Mrs. K.-Judaic Studies
The fourth grade took their 100 word Ivrit final this week. Everyone worked very hard to prepare themselves for the big test. This week we learned all about Lag B'omer and the significance of the day. We spoke about why and how we celebrate Lag B'omer and we discussed what goes on In Meron, the place where Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai is buried in Israel.

This week in fourth grade ELA the students continue to read their final trade book, "Walk Two Moons " and to study their new vocabulary words.They took their first Spelling/Vocabulary test since our break from receiving new words.They have been using all the strategies that we have learned thus far in answering reading comprehension questions and open ended responses. The students also finished writing their Compare and Contrast compositions, comparing the book, Walk Two Moons to the movie. Congrats to Alyssa L., Malka N., and Jacob G. for doing such a nice job on them and having the opportunity to present them to their class. They have been choosing their books for their final Book Talks that they will present on May 31st.

This week, we wrote about the hardest parts of fourth grade and how we could change them for the better. We also finished our read aloud of "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom." It is a very funny book about a boy who acts out, but learns how to be friends with others and succeed in school with the help of a school counselor.

Fourth grade has been doing operations on fractions, decimals, perpendicular and parallel line challenging word problems.
Mr. I.-Science
We held a review on energy and the class really grasps the material well. The fourth grade final exam will be following the quiz they will receive on the various forms of energy which I have no doubt they'll do great in!
Mr. I.-Social Studies
We have concluded with our civil war unit and will be reviewing next week! The growth of US cities coming up next.
Fifth Grade:
Ms. Regina-ELA
This week we worked on our portfolios and work for the Author's Tea. Our analyses have become very well done and thought out. Miss Regina is very impressed with how deeply some of us are thinking about sonnets and Shakespeare.
Mrs. Uzhansky-Math
Fifth grade has been doing area and perimeter problems and area of a triangle challenging word problems.
Mr. I.-Science
We just concluded the Endocrine system and its pathologies! Its safe to say our year long bio unit has come to an end. The students learned info that high school students gain and it will be uber useful when they pursue their careers as doctors. My words to them were "KEEP YOUR NOTEBOOKS, YOU WILL NEED THEM" We will be getting into our astronomy unit next!

We concluded our unit on Chinese dynasties. This was probably the favorite unit of the 5th grade thus far. The innovations, policies, stories and history was a fantastic journey for them all. Ancient Greece to come next!
