This week at SIHA!
All Grades Computers-Mr. I.
The classes all had the opportunity to play fun games because of their fantastic work at the science fair. Typing, Mouse, keyboarding games where all viable options and the students really do deserve to have some fun given all the hard work they have put in not just for the science fair but year round.
Kindergarten:
Ms. Syetta-ELA
This week we learned how to read and write words with the long a sound and we learned a trick to help us spell these words. We reviewed adjectives and practiced including many adjectives into our writing. Last week we listened to different types of poetry and this week we began writing our own poetry. We also analyzed a painting and wrote what message we thought the painter was trying to convey with his images.
Ms. Syetta-Math
This week we learned all about place-value and how to draw the tens and ones to represent, and compare and contrast, different numbers. We also learned about measurement and how to describe the size of objects by comparing their length and height.
Ms. Syetta-Science
This week we have been watching caterpillars and we are so amazed by how fast they are growing! We learned what entomologists do and we have been learning how to carefully observe the caterpillars to record our unbiased observations. We discussed the metamorphosis of caterpillars to butterflies and we can't wait for them to start making their chrysalises.
First Grade:
Mrs. Perles-ELA
This week was special. We finished reading Charlotte's Web and we celebrated by watching the movie. It was great seeing everything we read come to life. We really enjoyed it.
We finished reading the unit about animals. We learned about animals becoming extinct and how we hope their food will remain safe and hunters will not kill them.
We had so much fun having a few practice spelling bees. We all did great, however, everyone can use more practice.
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we continued to work in our Money unit. Kids identified coins and added them together. We also came up with different ways to make the same amount.
Mr. I.-Science
We had our science fair presentations this week and the class did such a great job! I was literally blown away by the projects, boards and presentations. A special thanks goes out to the students and parents for doing such a great job and making this science fair the best yet!
Second Grade:
Mrs. Shats-Math
Finished our last unit Geometry. We identified different geometric shapes, counted faces, vertices and edges. Completed patterns with shapes.
This week we finished our unit on fractions. Compared fractions, simplified fractions, and found equivalent fractions.
Mr. I.-Science
We had our science fair presentations this week and the class did such a great job! I was literally blown away by the projects, boards and presentations. A special thanks goes out to the students and parents for doing such a great job and making this science fair the best yet!
Mrs. Spiegel-Judaic Studies
We completed our first Hebrew story booklet this week.We learned about Rabbi Akiva who was one of the greatest Rabbis of the Jewish people.Rabbi Akiva started studying Torah when he was forty years old.We learn from Rabhi Akiva that it is never to late to begin studying as Rabbi Akiva started learning the aleph bet at this age.We also learned about Rabbi Simon bar Yochai whose yarzheit is this
coming Thursday Lag baomer, the thirty third day of the Omer. The Romans forbade Torah study at that time,Rabbi Shimon and his son hid in a cave and studied Torah.Lag Baomer is a day of celebration as that is when the students of Rabbi Akiva stopped dying.In this weeks Parsha we discussed the importance of making a kiddush Hashem no matter what we are doing.We should always try to do the right thing and sanctify
Hashem's name by our actions. Shabbat Shalom.

Third Grade:
Mrs. K.-Judaic Studies
The third graders started a new Hebrew story in Ivrit. The students read and translated the story as well as did many comprehension exercises on it. We learned about Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai who was a very righteous person and didn't listen to the Romans who forbade him to study the Torah.
Ms. Regina-ELA
This week we finished reading Love That Dog. We really enjoyed the ending and are preparing to write our own poems in the same format as the main character. We learned about many different types of poems.

Mrs. K.-Judaic Studies
The fourth grade did a fantastic job on their Chumash mesiba. Their hard work paid off and all the practice really did make "perfect". Thank you to all the parents that came. This week we started to review for our upcoming Ivrit final which will take place on Wednesday, may 25. Each day time will be devoted to prepare for the final. The students will participate in interactive and fun games that will help them memorize and understand the material that will be on the exam.

Fourth grade completed an end of year review. We have been doing whole number and fraction challenging word problems.
Mr. I.-Science

We also continued our unit on energy and the class really seems to grasp the materials well.

We discussed the beginnings of civil war tensions in the US. We got into North vs South on slavery and abolitionism followed by the Kansas Nebraska act and the Missouri compromise. We will continue this next week and be tested on it very soon.
Fifth Grade:
Ms. Regina-ELA
This week we read many Shakespearean excerpts and poems to analyze for the Author's Tea. We have become very good at understanding the deeper meaning of sonnets and discussing them in our writing.
Mrs. Uzhansky-Math
Fifth grade finished learning currency rates. They have been doing percentage problems and whole number and fraction challenging word problems.
Mr. I.-Science

We also continued our unit on the endocrine system which will be our last system before we move on to astronomy.

We began our unit on ancient China discussing the Shang, Zhou, Qin and Han dynasties. Personally, I love Chinese history because of their witty methods of running governments. The students are in love with this unit. We will continue this next week followed by ancient Greece.
