KINDERGARTEN
Mrs, Shats Math Enrichment
This week we worked on ordinal numbers. Counting on and back using ordinal numbers. Completed word problems with ordinal numbers.
Ms Regina Math, SS and Geography
We have been learning about the hundreds, tens, and ones places in a number. We can draw it with blocks, rods, and ones. We can identify the number based on the drawings. We have also been writing our own word problems and creating questions based on a graph. For example: Who has the most? Who has the least? How many more? How many altogether?
Graduation
We have begun practicing for graduation. We are familiarizing ourselves with our lines and had our first full run through. We are beginning to practice our song and we feel great about it! We are so excited to perform in front of our family and friends.
Ms Syetta ELA and Science
This week we continued to learn all about how to read long u words. We learned how to compare two or more items by adding er or est to the end of adjectives. We practiced reading vowel digraphs and long vowel words by reading the story of Johnny Appleseed, which is the fourth story in our 5th first grade reader. We used a Venn diagram to compare the story we read to the read aloud of Johnny Appleseed. We learned about visualization and we practiced visualizing stories and drawing corresponding pictures. We also began writing a How-To. We picked something we are experts at and we wrote instructions to tell someone how to do the activity.
In Science we reviewed where different animals live, how they move, what they look like, and what body parts they have. We also learned that some animals hibernate to survive the winter and we made puppets of different animals that hibernate.
Mrs Ivry Judaic Studies
The students are getting ready to celebrate the special holiday of Shavuoth. The story of the Har Sinai, the Mount Sinai, that Hashem chose from all the mountain for its humbleness (Here I will let your child tell you the story of the Midrash about the fight of the mountains) is the favorite. We discussed the difference between being humble and thinking poorly of ourselves. It is important to recognize one’s ability without bragging about it.
This week's Parsha details the special Mitzva of Shmita which is the 7th year consecrated to rest and Torah study by the farmers. This year is the year of Shmita in Israel.
Kindergarteners are busy practicing their graduation show and they are reading Hebrew words with 2 syllables! Please keep practicing their part. If you do not have it, send a note in HW folder and we will send you a copy.
FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Perles ELA
We've been working very hard on our end of the year book written and illustrated totally by us. It is truly amazing. You 're in for a wonderful surprise. This week we read a great story about losing something and how devastating it feels. But sometimes it turns out for the best. It was a great lesson for all of us. Thank you again for sending in great pictures and info for our social studies book. It is really coming out nice.
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
This week we worked on adding and subtracting tens and ones from two digit numbers. We are continuing to practice addition and subtraction with renaming.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we learned all about the rainforest. We learned that there are different layers in the rainforest, what animals live in each part of the rainforest, and we learned a song to help us remember the layers of the rainforest.

First graders are passing all their challenge! They can now read a page in less than a minute! They are getting ready to pass the Yellow level and move on to the Green. Test to pass to Green on Wednesday May 20th.
Ms May Geography
We have completed our lesson on the state of New York and Staten Island. We have begun learning about the 7 continents.
SECOND GRADE
Ms. May ELA, SS and Geography
This week in ELA the students learned about the 8 parts of speech, articles (those little words that help connect the sentences together like: ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’!), prepositions and interjections. We also learned a list of new vocabulary words that will prepare us to better understand our next-to-last trade book, Charlotte’s Web. We are working on completing our last Book Talk presentations.
In SS we are learning about our fifth historian Benjamin Franklin. We are also working on our weekly current events article.
In Geography we are finishing up our unit on learning about New York and Staten Island.
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
Started a unit on geometry. We counted flat and curved surfaces. Made shapes out of cut out paper. Completed patterns . Counted angles and sides to figure out what shapes it is.
Mrs. Spiegel Judaic & Hebrew Studies
I can't believe how fast this year has gone by. The children are learning Hebrew quickly, and are able to understand and respond in Hebrew well.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we reviewed everything we learned about the five types of vertebrates and the life cycles of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
THIRD GRADE
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
This week we finished our unit on area and perimeter. Started intensive practice for the math standardized test.
Mrs. Khukhashvili Judaic & Hebrew Studies
This week we spoke about our "Inner Muscles" and that we should stay strong and do the right thing.(Ex: Defending someone who is being bullied, not cheating, studying for a test although you rather do something more exciting.....etc.) We also spoke about perseverance and not giving up although the odds are against you. We spoke about people who never gave up regardless of the obstacles standing in their way (Beethoven, Maickel Melamed who inspired everyone by finishing the Boston Marathon while suffering from a condition similar to muscular dystrophy.) We went through people in Jewish History who became great even though they had obstacles standing in their way. We spoke about Yosef who was thrown into a pit by his brothers, sold, and put into jail but ended up becoming "Mishne Limelech" (2nd to the king). Among the many examples we discussed the Jewish nation stands out. Throughout History we were persecuted by our enemies but yet we remain alive and still have faith in G-d. This week was very inspirational. The students started talking about their "Inner Muscles" and how they will remain strong no matter what obstacle stands in their way.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we learned all about how birds are adapted to live in their environment. We learned that we could tell where a bird lives and what it eats by looking at their feet and their beak. Using what we learned we had remarkable debates about where we thought each animal lives and what it eats.
It was great to see the entire class involved in the discussion and their enthusiasm in explaining their reasoning.
Ms Landa SS and ELA
This week both groups finished reading their novels: El Deafo and Out of my Mind. We really gained a better understanding of what people with disabilities feel, how they are treated, and how we could practice tolerance. Baruch Hashem we are all healthy and capable, but we must remember that those that cannot should be treated with respect and kindness. On a lighter note, we also continued to review multiple meaning words. In Social Studies, we discovered the beginning stages of the creation of Washington D.C. In doing so, we learned two new words: surrender and habitable.
Ms May Geography
We have completed our lesson on the state of New York and Staten Island. We have begun learning about the 7 continents.
FOURTH GRADE
Mrs. Khukhashvili Judaic & Hebrew Studies
The 4th grade is working extremely hard on their chumash mesiba. The students are reading, translating the text, and working very well with each other. We started "Perek Bet" (chapter 2) in our chumash this week.
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
We worked on bar graphs and line plots and practiced for the standardized test.
Mrs Uzhansky Math
Ms Landa ELA and SS
This week we started reading Stargirl and we discussed the novel's major theme: nonconformity. Students seemed to think that if we had the elusive Stargirl at SIHA that they would find her "awesome" and "fun." They once again reminded me of how special SIHA students are-- we accept and celebrate one another's differences! In Social Studies, we applied our understanding of the Bill of Rights and we created posters illustrating the first ten amendments.
Ms May Geography
We have completed our lesson on the state of New York and Staten Island. We have begun learning about the 7 continents.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we learned all about how people and animals can inherit traits from their family and they can learn traits as they grow. We each picked papers containing various inherited traits out of a bag to randomly create a person. We learned that people can’t control the traits they inherit from their parents just like we could not control what color hair or eye color we picked from the bag.
