KINDERGARTEN
Mrs, Shats Math Enrichment
We worked on counting on by tens and adding on to tens. We did a lot of word problems with addition and subtraction.
Ms Regina Math, SS and Geography
MathWe have been learning about the tens and ones in a number. We can make them with laminated manipulatives, identify the number, and draw the number. Soon, we will be learning the hundreds.We have also been working backwards to create word problems. We are given an answer and have to write a word problem showing that answer. We are more like first graders every day!
Social Studies
This week was Teacher Appreciation Week. We read a book entitled "My Teacher for President" and talked about all of the things our teachers do for us. Miss Regina wrote the names of all the teachers we have on the board and we chose one to write a card to thanking them for being our teacher. We really appreciate our teachers and all of the hard work they do.
Ms Syetta ELA and Science
This week we learned all about how to read long u words by playing games. We practiced reading long u words by reading our third story in our 5th first grade reader. We had so much fun reading the new story because it was a play. We got to work in groups and use this weeks story to put on a play for the class. We also continued to write our book reports. We had a lot of fun on our trip to the library. The librarian taught us how much we can learn by reading books. We also had a blast playing and learning to work together at the park!
In Science we continued to learn about how the external features of animals help them live in their environment. We learned how penguins have feathers and blubber to stay warm, flippers to swim, bills to eat, eyes to find their food, and feet to walk on the ice. We labeled a penguin, colored a penguin, and wrote all about penguins.
Mrs Ivry Judaic Studies
The week started with a fun Aleph Bet party for Kindergarten and ended with an awesome trip for Lag B’Omer followed by a delicious project of making a bonfire with treats before Shabbat. But this is not all! Kindergarten started learning the rules of Hebrew reading and can now read and spell letters with one vowel. In Hebrew we call a vowel a Nekudah. They learned the Kamatz- ah!
This week's Parsha is a synopsis of all the Jewish Holidays that are written in the Torah: Raosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Pessach and Shavuoth. Look at the questions bellow and let’s see if your child got them right!

FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Perles ELA
We love the new warm sunny weather making us think of summer. So we wrote a great composition called Summer is Coming. We told about our love of swimming, bike riding, and going to the park. You could read how we have become wonderful descriptive writers. It is awesome!
We have also completed our last second grade reader. We are amazing readers. How do I know? We daily take three reading tests with comprehension questions. The entire class gets at least 2 out of 3 tests correct.
We had a ball working on our state in our Social Studies book. We enjoyed cutting out the pictures and info and learning about our state.
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
We worked on adding and subtracting two digit numbers using different strategies. Adding and subtracting with renaming . Completed word problems using pictographs.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we continued to learn about the ocean. We learned how there are different layers to the ocean, what animals live in each part of the ocean, and we made a picture to show where different animals live in the ocean. We also began learning about the rainforest.
Mrs Ivry Judaic Studies
First grade's highlight of this week's reading was that the entire class passed the challenge to read page 30 in less than 30 second. Wow! We saw amazing team work on teachers’ day.

SECOND GRADE
Ms. May ELA, SS and Geography
This week in ELA the students learned about Similes and Metaphors. They finished reading their sixth trade book and practiced identifying the moral and climax in The Courage of Sarah Noble. They also learned that often there is more than one conflict in a story. Lastly, the students learned about Homographs to improve upon their vocabulary skills.
The students continue to present their current event articles to expand their knowledge about the world around them. They are also improving on their research and oral skills.
In Geography, We have finished our unit on New York and New Jersey.
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
This week we worked in our Sprints book for extra practice with addition and subtraction with and without renaming two and three digit numbers. In Process Skills book we worked on addiction, subtraction, division and multiplication word problems using bar modeling.
Mrs. Spiegel Judaic & Hebrew Studies
We had a busy week as usual in second grade.We are studying the various brachot made on different foods.We learned about Rabbi Akiva and the significance of Lag Baomer which we celebrated yesterday at YISI park.

This week we finished our books about the five types of vertebrates. We learned about the life cycles of mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. We cut and glued the life cycles of the animals in order. We also got to put together a puzzle showing the life cycle of a frog.
THIRD GRADE
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
We worked on challenging multi step word problems with addition , subtraction, division and multiplication using bar modeling. We started a unit on area and perimeter . This week we covered how to calculate and compare perimeter of given figures. We are continuing to practice for the MST.
Mrs. Khukhashvili Judaic & Hebrew Studies
The 3rd grade took their Ivrit test this week. We spent a lot of time on the topic of Hebrew suffixes and how to apply them to different shorashim (root words). Since Mother's Day is coming up on Sunday we took the time to learn and delve into the Torah and see what it has to say on the topic. We learned that Mother's Day (And Father's Day) is really EVERYDAY! The 5th Commandment (Of the Aseret Hadibrot) states that we are commanded to Honor our Father and Mother all the time. We spoke about different ways we can honor our parents.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we learned all about how animals are adapted to live in their environment. We were given an a picture of an animal and we determined where it lives and what it eats based on its external features. We learned how birds have different beaks depending on what they eat and where they live. The students were able to infer what each bird eats by observing the birds beaks
Ms Landa SS and ELA
This week we continued literature circles and we learned about multiple meaning words. The students broke up into pairs and listed as many multiple meaning words as they could think of-- it quickly turned into a fun competition! In Social Studies we discovered the original designs of the beautiful American flag.

FOURTH GRADE
Mrs. Khukhashvili Judaic & Hebrew Studies
The 4th grade started a new unit in Ivrit. We began reading a new Hebrew story that pertained to the unit which had the new vocabulary words that we learned. Lag Ba'omer was
on Thursday! We learned the significance about that day and why it's such a joyous day. We spoke about Rabbi Akiva and his talmidim (student) who stopped dying from the plague that Hashem inflicted on them because they didn't do the mitzvah of "Viahavta Larecha Kamocha" (loving another like oneself) properly. We also learned about Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai who composed the Zohar.
Since Mother's Day is coming up on Sunday we took the time to learn and delve into the Torah and see what it has to say on the topic. This week the fourth grade learned to identify and represent perpendicular lines, parallel lines, and figures with line of symmetry. We also reviewed properties of quadrilaterals and triangles. Next Monday there will be a test on Geometry. Please bring in your protractors.
Ms Landa ELA and SS
This week we read and analyzed a variety of short stories. We determined the main characters, setting, conflict, resolution and themes. We also reviewed synonyms and antonyms. In Social Studies, we learned about the Bill of Rights.
