Social Studies
We have started to learn about mail carriers and all of the hard work they put into their jobs. When we first started, we thought the mail carriers just got into their trucks and delivered the mail. We were wrong! We learned that some mail carriers get to work as early at 4 a.m. to sort their mail and pack their trucks! Miss Regina showed us videos about what a mail carrier does and we are planning to write our own letters to family members. Please send in addresses if you have not already.
Geography
We started to learn about Italy this week. We learned about the Mona Lisa and the Leaning Tower of PIsa. We wrote about our favorite character, part of a book, color, food, television show, day of the week, holiday, and favorite Dr. Seuss book. We also learned how to make a list. We are almost finished reading the stories in our second reader. We also practiced reading and writing rhyming words, consonant blends, and the digraphs th and sh by playing games such as bingo.
In Science we learned all about magnets. We learned how magnets can attract or repel other magnets and how magnets can attract other items. We had a lot of fun making predictions and experimenting to learn what objects are attracted to magnets and what objects are not attracted to magnets.

SECOND GRADE
Ms. May ELA, SS and Geography
The 2nd graders started off the week by receiving a well-deserved treat for doing a terrific job at the S.S. fair, and for getting a 90% or better on their last Spelling/Vocabulary test! I’m so very proud of their effort and success!
In ELA class we read our 5th trade book, The Long Way to the New Land by Joan Sandin. We learned new vocabulary words pertaining to the text. We answered questions which tested our reading comprehension by practicing different reading strategies such as: recalling information, making predictions, drawing conclusions, and identifying characters. We also started learning the four different types of sentences in the English language—Interrogative, Declarative, Imperative and Exclamatory; and the appropriate punctuation marks used for each one to help us to become better writers.
We continue to focus on our writing goals and I taped each student’s goal to their desks so that they can be mindful when practicing their craft. The 2nd graders were also given worksheets to help each of them to practice and improve upon these individualized goals. We focused on one of the classes’ goals as a whole: when to use the article “A” verses “An”, and the students are beginning to become conscientious of this rule not only in their writing, but in catching errors in their peers’ writing as well!
In S.S. class we started up with Current Events again, and the students are excited about presenting their articles.
In Geography, the 2nd graders have finally completed our class neighborhood after working on it for the past two weeks! It turned out to be a stunning project that helped the class to understand the relationship between the neighborhoods and the directional points (S, N, E, W) as well as the four bridges that help us to travel to and from Brooklyn and New Jersey. It will be on display for all to see outside our bulletin board.
