We made clocks on our chart paper and made cocks with our bodies. We had so much fun! Pretty soon we'll be able to tell if it is snack time or lunch time so we won't have to ask Miss Regina anymore during her lessons! ;)

We are so excited to begin reading our third first grade reader. We did an excellent job reading and we were so happy to read our first long story. We also have been practicing reading consonant, vowel, consonant, final e (CVCe) words by dressing up as Bossy E and telling the vowels to say their name.
In Science we reviewed the scientific method to prepare for our Science fair experiment and we discussed the types of experiments we can do for our topic. We also continued playing with magnets and we determined that wood, plastic, and paper are not magnetic but metal things are usually magnetic. We had a lot of fun using magnets and paperclips to complete different types of mazes.

This week we've been very busy with the upcoming Holiday of Pessach. There will be no Newsletter until after Pessach. The children are working very hard on their Haggadah. They listen to the story and ask such deep questions!! We are having very interesting discussions about the reasons we celebrate Pessach and why we eat all these special foods. Before Pessach they will bring home their personalized Haggadah and you will be able to go over everything with your child. THere will also be the Holiday mItzva note to fill out. If you are planning to attend a Seder either at home, with family or in a community Seder, please make sure your child take the Haggadah and encourage them to share something they learned at the table. And of course, we are practicing singing the Mah Nishtana (the famous 4 questions that children ask at the opening of the Seder.

SECOND GRADE
Ms. May ELA, SS and Geography
This week in ELA the students finished their 5th trade book, A Long Way to a New Land and worked with an array of reading strategies to ensure their reading comprehension skills. I re-tested the students’ reading levels for fluency and I am happy to report that most of the 2nd graders have gone up an entire reading level since they were last tested in November! We focused on pronouns and the parts of speech, so that we will be able to construct well- written sentences. We had our Spelling/Vocabulary test on Monday. The students will begin taking other types of tests such as reading comprehension tests, and tests to measure their ability to recall information and retain material learned after the Passover break. I will also be introducing to them a new approach to a the infamous book report, the Book Talk which will give our auditory and verbal learners a chance to shine, and give our savvy writers the opportunity to improve on their verbal expression and communicative skills!
In SS, Current Events is back in effect and the 2nd graders are learning how to pick the best article for themselves—an article that they can read without too much difficulty and can understand with ease so that they can share their article with their classmates. The goal is not for the students to read from the article, or to recite the article verbatim; but for them to be able to absorb what they read and comfortably present it to the class.
In Geography, The 2nd graders have finished their neighborhood maps and it is hanging on our bulletin board for all to see. Make sure to take a sneak peek during p/t conference. We are now beginning our unit on the 50 States of America. On Thursday, the class was given a challenge to see who could name the most states and the winner will receive two stars to add to their in- class Student of the Month contest! To be announced in the next newsletter!
