This week we learned all about how to identify the elements of a story. We reviewed how to determine the setting of a story and the main characters. We listened to a read aloud and created wonderful paintings to show the setting of the story. We also learned how to determine the problem and solution in a story. We realized that just like how we have problems the characters in our stories have problems too! We created and put together our own problem and solution puzzles. We also began reading our last story in our book, practiced reading and writing consonant blends, and how to infer difficult words in a story by using the illustrations.
This week in Science we learned all about what happens when you put solids into a liquid. We learned that all liquids take the shape of a container but solids do not change shape when poured. We had too much fun experimenting to see what objects will sink or float when placed into water. In fact, we spilled so much water during our experiment that we got to see how water can take the shape of the desk and even the classroom floor!

We also learned the Mitzva of keeping a Kosher kitchen and eating Kosher food, saying the truth and returning a lost object.
Kindergarteners amazed me as they formed reading teams that we call teacher/student teams! They did an amazing job reading in pair. They learned the Samech and Ayin. Made a Samech out of sand and an Ayin out of eyes!

FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Perles ELA
This week our first grade has transformed our compositions from cute small booklets to formal writing. The topic was Who Am I? Each child described what occupation they want to be when they grow up, but didn't say what it was. If they gave enough good clues, I would be able to guess. See if you can do it. I did.
We read a wonderful story called One Grain of Rice. It was fascinating to hear how one grain multiplied into millions by a clever little girl.
We sang our Word of the Day song for Mrs. Uzhansky. She was certainly amazed by our knowledge of all eighty words with their meanings.
In Social Studies we began studying life in colonial days. We learned about coopers, silversmiths, and the apothecary. We learned how to find important facts in our text books.
Ms. May Geography

This week we learned all about what happens when solids, such as wood, metal, and plastic are placed into liquids. We experimented with many objects and found that the wood and plastic objects were floating but the metal did not. We also found that the plastic balls with holes sank as they filled with water. We learned that water and sugar dissolve in water, but sand does not, and water and oil will never mix. We had a lot of fun creating boats and testing to see if they would float and who can create a boat that can hold the most amount of pennies.
SECOND GRADE
Ms. May ELA, SS and Geography
In ELA, This week the 2nd graders finished their 4th trade book, Ruby Bridges and learned an important moral: racism and segregation (is) wrong! They spent the beginning of the week learning about homophones. This week they also spent some time familiarizing themselves with common sight words and “OU” vowel blends. These words have been compiled to make for a 20- word Spelling test, strictly for the purpose of s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g (rest assure, vocabulary will not be tested)! The 2nd graders have finished writing about their writing assignment, “My Favorite Book Ever” and I’m proud to have it displayed on our bulletin board. This week we learned all about the simple machines the screw, wedge, and pulley. We got to observe and experiment to see how these simple machines make work easier. We saw how the screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a rod and how the threads help a screw join, hold, lift, or clamp things together. We saw how a wedge makes it easier to split things apart and lift a door. We also got to try using a simple pulley by using string and a broom to lift a block.
