We absolutely loved our trip to the aquarium this week! It was so much fun! From the bumpy ride there, to the penguins eating, to the sea lion show - we enjoyed everything! We saw a huge shark and watched a sea otter swim back and forth right up against the tank. We were so close! We also saw a walrus and so many different types of fish.

Math
This week, we have been reviewing time and have also begun our word problem study. From now on, we will be working with different types of word problems. Every day, we have a problem of the day and then get to act out different problems to better understand the problem. Miss Regina always puts our names in the word problems to make it more fun!
Social Studies
We learned all about the library and librarians today. We even booked a trip to go to the library on May 4! We will learn how to properly borrow books and some of us may even get our own library cards! How exciting! Miss Regina is letting us borrow books from the classroom, as long as we return them! We also made our own book marks and received our own class library cards!
Geography
This week, we finished up our lesson about the Netherlands. We made windmills with different facts about the Netherlands to take home.
Ms Syetta ELA and Science
This week we learned all about the long a sounds. We learned how to read, spell, and sort ai, ay, and a_e words. We also played games to practice reading and spelling long a words. We are halfway through our 4th first grade reader. We are working very hard on becoming more fluent as we read longer and more complicated stories. We are also learning how to include all of the important details when retelling a story.
This week in Science we learned all about animals. We had a blast going to the aquarium! We saw all different types of fish, sharks, penguins, and sea lions. We painted pictures of the different animals we saw at the aquarium and we made sure to paint the correct setting for where the animals live. We also wrote amazing stories all about what we saw and all of the fun things we did while at the aquarium.
FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Perles ELA
We had the best time ever at the New York Aquarium. We especially loved the sea lion show and the 4D movie.
We wrote a How To composition. Some children wrote about how to swim, ride a bike, or play the piano. The class learned how to think and write step by step describing the process of how we do things.
We read a fantastic story called Farfallina and Marcel. It was a beautiful story about the friendship of a goose and butterfly. We all loved it.
Mrs. Shats Math Enrichment
Worked on telling time and reviewing for the test. Solved challenging word problems.
Ms Syetta Science
This week we learned all about the Arctic. We learned what the weather is like, what animals live there, and how these animals are able to live in such a cold climate. We conducted an experiment by wearing blubber on our hand to learn how they can live in the Arctic. We also began learning about the desert and how the climate is the opposite of the Arctic.
SECOND GRADE
Ms. May ELA, SS and Geography
This week in ELA class we started off the week by working on a writing assignment; the students wrote two paragraphs, explaining how they celebrated Passover and how they spent the remainder of their break. We continued utilizing our writing juices by working on another assignment; the students had to create their first short story. However, prior to being assigned this task they had a two- day lesson on the Literary Elements (characters, conflict, setting, theme, resolution, etc)of a story. We had two winners for The Best Story Writer—Taylor Badalov and Emilia Boom! Let’s not forget our 2 time Student of ELA class—Elliott Agres!
We also learned how to write a Book Talk. This will be in substitute for writing a Book Report, and give our verbal and visual learners the opportunity to shine. Please see the rubric which is attached under the ELA HW section on Quickschools , as well as the handout that is in your child’s Reading Folder.
We also began reading our fifth trade book, The Courage of Sarah Noble, which seems to already be the class favorite. We have been busy answering questions in response to our shared reading which taps into many of the students’ reading abilities/ skills. Lastly, we have been working to remember the spelling of our new word list which compiles the U.S.’s most difficult-to-spell states! This is definitely a challenging list and therefore, vocabulary is not a worry this week! This word list ties nicely into our unit on the 50 states that we are learning about in Geography class.
In SS, we have started up with our Current Events, but after a rigorous lesson on How to Create the Best Current Events Presentation, the students have (as usual) rose to the occasion! What a difference I have seen in their work. Illuminating a student’s mind is the key to success. We have also begun to learn about our third historian, Pocahontas (finally, the girls are happy).
In Geography, This week we learned about the state of New Jersey, we reviewed terms such as capital, population, etc, as well as directional points (S,E,N, W).
