KINDERGARTEN
Mrs, Shats Math Enrichment
This week we started adding on to two digit numbers. We worked on problem solving with addition and subtraction

Math
This week we practiced writing and answering different types of word problems -- not only addition and subtraction, but also graphing and comparing numbers. We are doing fantastic! We were able to write our own word problems and love to create word problems as a class. We couldn't believe how many questions we could come up with about a simple graph!
Social Studies
We finished up our librarian study in preparation for our trip on Monday. We are so excited to pick out books, learn about librarian and their jobs, and to get our very own library cards!
Ms Syetta ELA and Science
This week we learned all about how to read long o words by playing matching games. We practiced reading long o words by reading our second story in our 5th first grade reader. We began learning how to compare and contrast stories by using a venn diagram. We learned how to take the information from our graphic organizer and write sentences to explain how the stories are the same and how they are different. We also practiced verbs tenses by writing different verbs on our own chalkboards. We independently read our books for our book report and began writing our book reports.
In science we did an amazing job presenting our science fair projects. I am so proud of the students and how much they learned. Michelle did an amazing job explaining her experiment about how different environments can cause mold to grow on bread faster. Sam did a great job explaining his experiment on whether organic or non-organic strawberries spoil faster. Congratulations to Michelle and Sam!

We reviewed our letters the whole week. We learned how to write our name in Hebrew. We were able to guess most of the spelling. This was so exciting! We also learned about the Mitzvah of Kibbud Av V'em (respecting parents) We discussed many different aspects of the Mitzvah such as greeting parents, not waking them up, not contradicting, listening to them right away and more. We also discussed appropriate ways to address our parents when we disagree. We reviewed Mitzvot that are brought up in this week 's Parsha such as not saying Lashon HAra and respecting our parents.
This week's highlight was the Aleph Bet party! With hands activities, edible letters and games, the party was a blast. We even got to write our name with Aleph Bet cookies! We can't wait to start introduction to Hebrew reading! And we also started practicing for the GRADUATION!! Looking forward to see my students shine!
FIRST GRADE

We are so excited. This week we received our new Social Studies book. We all have chosen or were assigned a state. Over every weekend, we will find pictures and information on special aspects of our state; for example, the state tree, state bird, or its map. We will have so much fun cutting, gluing, and learning.
We wrote a fun composition about our best birthday. The kids loved their cake, party, and of course the presents.
This week we read a lot about keeping our world clean and safe. We know about the importance of recycling, keeping our air clean, and making sure the animals are not endangered.

We were counting on and counting back numbers up to 120. Ordering numbers in order and comparing numbers. Used number bonds to help us add and subtract. Completed a lot of equations with adding and subtracting tens.

This week in science we did an amazing job presenting our science fair projects. I am so proud of the students and how much they learned. Matanel showed a true understanding of what type of soil we should use to grow turnips. Jacob Gluck excitedly explained his experiment about whether music affects the growth of a plant. Congratulations to Matanel and Jacob Gluck!

First graders are reading with the new vowel Cholam. They are also practicing reading a page in less than a minute. THis is the class challenge and we will be working on reaching it for the next few weeks.We also learned about the Mitzvah of Kibbud Av V'em (respecting parents) We discussed many different aspects of the Mitzvah such as greeting parents, not waking them up, not contradicting, listening to them right away and more. We read the fascinating story of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochay who left his cave after 13 years on Lag B'Omer and who Passed away on that day. He instituted this day as a day of joy and celebration as he completed his life mission to teach Kabbalah, the deepest secrets of Torah.
SECOND GRADE
Ms. May ELA, SS and Geography
This week in ELA class we continue to read our 6th trade book, The Courage of Sarah Noble and answer questions that test our reading skills. The students presented their first Book Talks in front of the class to showcase their favorite book! They were also given their 27th Spelling/Vocabulary Word List! I am proud to say that the class as a whole, received 90% or higher on last week’s test, so I will be giving them a special treat come Friday! The students learned the Literary Elements that make up a story (characters, setting, conflict, resolution and moral) and they finished writing their creative short stories. I am so proud that they were able to include most of the literary elements in their stories, and have done a nice job in developing a sense of voice when writing. We also tackled the skill of determining when to use quotes to express dialogue between characters.
In SS the students learned about our 4th historian, Pocahontas and were delighted to hear of her victories! We also continue to present our Current Event articles in our new and improved way.
The students learned about New Jersey and New York on varying levels depending on their grade.

This week we continued our unit on brachot,we learned in this weeks double parshoit about honoring parents,standing up for older people to show respect and the mitzva of loving your friend as yourself.We spoke about different ways we can honor our parents.

Jonathan very enthusiastically explained his science fair project on how the size of an airplane affects how far it will fly. Taylor showed a true understanding of density from conducting her experiment about what type of liquid is denser. Congratulations to Jonathan and Taylor!

This week we started geometry unit. Counting sides and angles of a shapes.
Identifying angles, acute, obtuse and right angles. We also practiced for the math standardized test.
Mrs. Khukhashvili Judaic & Hebrew Studies
The 3rd grade focused on strengthening their Hebrew writing and speaking skills. We completed many assignments on the Hebrew suffixes, detecting if a word is singular or plural, and what gender it is written in. This week's parsha(yot) is "Acharei Mot- Kidoshim" in which we learn so many valuable life lessons. We had a lengthy class discussion on what it means to be a "mentch" (a person with integrity and honor) and we included many examples from this week's Torah Portion(s).

This week we continued reading our novels: El Deafo, a graphic memoir by Cece Bell, and Out of my Mind, by Sharon Draper. Both novels are about children with disabilities and we are learning tolerance. In Social Studies, we learned about heroines of the American Revolution and we talked about how women aided men in the war even though they were not allowed to serve in the armed forces.

FOURTH GRADE
Mrs. Khukhashvili Judaic & Hebrew Studies
The fourth grade did a lot of Ivrit practice. We learned where our Hebrew suffixes come from and how we apply them to words. Although it was a difficult topic and confusing to some students, everyone tried their best and proved that "practice makes perfect!" The fourth grade spent a lot of time this week reading and translating Rashi from their chumash. We learned deeper meanings to the text as well as build our Hebrew vocabulary.

Geometry unit- we investigated properties of parallelograms, rhombuses, and trapezoids.
Mrs Uzhansky Math
This week the fourth graders defined what points, lines, line segments, rays and angles are. They are able to identify the types of angles and can measure angles by estimation or using protractors.

This week in science we did an amazing job presenting our science fair projects. I am so proud of the students and how much they learned. Nathan did an amazing job explaining why both his apples and lemons would not light up a light bulb. Daniel did an excellent job on his experiment about what materials make the best conductors. Congratulations to Nathan and Daniel.

This week 4th grade devoured the rest of the Liberation of Gabriel King and we reviewed the skill of citing text evidence in answering short response questions (a crucial test-taking skill). Some central themes in the novel were: fears, racism and segregation; we had many serious discussions about these issues. As a tie-in to Social Studies, we also learned about racism today.
