We had another fabulous and productive week. We have completed our 27th week of vocabulary words. We know 98 words with their meanings. Amazing!
This week we read a wonderful story called The Ugly Vegetables. It taught us to always be happy with what you have. We loved it. We had a wonderful discussion about how we should be proud of what we have.
Since it is Spring, we wrote a composition about how to plant flower seeds and grow beautiful flowers. Why? Perhaps to bring them to sick people in the hospital, or to put a smile on someone's face, or to fill a vase for my Shabbat table. What wonderful stories!
We have been finishing our workbooks. We are so proud of our accomplishments!
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we started a unit on subtraction to 100. We are learning to subtract mentally by breaking numbers apart into number bonds to make it easier for us to subtract.
Mr. I.-Science
We began our unit on animal kingdoms. We studied Mammals, birds, and fish thus far. We named the various characteristics of each and named some examples of animals that fall into that kingdom and why. We will continue with this unit next week as we begin studying reptiles and amphibians.

This week we started a unit on graphs. Kids are learning to read graphs, answer questions from a graph and create graphs based on the information given.
Ms. May-ELA
This week in ELA the 2nd graders are focusing on creating their Homemade Books. So far, we have written an Acrostic Poem in which the students had the chance to create--learning how to choose different font styles in computer class while designing it. We also wrote letters to our famous favorite person--from singers to inventors, the students enjoyed it.
We finished reading "Charlotte's Web" and we were disheartened that Charlotte had to leave our earth, but our hearts smiled knowing that Wilbur would have her children to care for. We took a written quiz on the book. Lastly, we made a "CW" Book pamphlet depicting the character traits of each of the infamous animals.
We began learning about memories to introduce our Memoir Writing Unit. The students were pretty interested in discovering how our five senses can trigger a memory-whether it be a scent or a visual-- it only takes one to travel back in time to a place one holds dear. The students had a nice interdisciplinary moment where ELA met Science while talking about long-term memory! We also learned about selective memory and some of us definitely have it!:)
Ms. Regina-Literary Workshop
This week, we worked on writing dialogue in our stories. We watched the Pixar short "Partly Cloudy", which had no dialogue. Then, on looseleaf, we retold the story and made up our own dialogue. We learned the format for dialogue and were encouraged to use other words than just "said". Next week, we will continue this topic.

They are making beautiful haggadot that have all their Pesach notes inside.

Ms. Regina-ELA
This week, we worked on our short stories about pirates. We watched a video called "Five Elements of a Short Story", which showed these elements in a fun and interesting rap (which is now stuck in our heads!). Then, we outlined our story and began our first draft. We followed with the construction of a story arc. To reinforce that idea, we watched a Pixar short called "Partly Cloudy" and filled in our story arcs. Finally, we peer edited each other's stories and wrote a new draft for Miss Regina to write her final comments before typing.
Fourth Grade:
Mrs. K.-Judaic Studies
The fourth graders fin ished unit 5 in their Ivrit workbooks. They read a Hebrew story in class and did many comprehension exercises on it. This week, we began our exciting adventure on Biblionasium.com. It is a great site for children to recommend books to their friend, review the books they are reading, and log the reading they complete nightly. As a class, we have added books to our "bookshelf" and have sent recommendations to our classmates that many of us are seriously considering. Also this week, we wrote an essay about friendship. Friendship is a major theme in our novel Fish in a Tree. We discussed what makes a friend and some examples of friends in our lives and novels. Finally, to complement the novel, we worked on creating butterflies out of coffee filters and clothespins and writing our wishes, just like Ally.
