Kindergarten:
Mrs. Ivry-Judaic Studies
It was so nice to great the children and to hear all about their Purim experience. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the beautiful and thoughtful Mishloach Manot.
This week we introduced the next upcoming Jewish Holiday of Pesach, Passover. We discussed and read about the 2 main Mitzvot of Pesach which are not eating any Chametz (leavened) food and eating Matzah.
We reviewed the letters and we are currently practicing reading all the letters at a speed of 2 lines in 20 seconds. As we learn about Pesach, we are proud to be able to spell a lot of Hebrew words such as Pesach, Hagadah, Matzah, Chametz and more.
Please send in a plastic folder with 3 prongs in the middle for our Pesach Hagadah. Thank you!
Shabbat Shalom

This week kindergarten read a story about two bugs that wanted to take a bath. We practiced reading, writing, and sorting words with the digraphs CH, TH, and SH and we played sight word games to practice identifying our sight words. We also continued to write about non-fiction topics.
Ms. Syetta-Math
This week kindergarten learned all about 2D and 3D shapes. We learned how to draw 2D and 3D shapes. We compared the properties of each shape and counted their sides and corners. We practiced cutting and sorting each shape and we played games to help us practice identifying each shape.
Ms. Syetta-Social Studies
This week kindergarten reviewed everything they have been learning about the globe and how to find Staten Island on the globe. We also began practicing our addresses and phone numbers.
Ms. Syetta-Science
This week kindergarten had a lot of fun conducting an experiment to learn which solid objects sink or float. We learned what makes an object solid or liquid and we worked in groups to experiment and discover what objects sink or float in water.

First Grade:
We continue practicing our reading with the Kubutz. It is getting challenging and we will spend some time on it until all students are comfortable moving on. We learned to write the letters Tazdik and Tzadik Sofit in script and passed our Purim test. On Monday we will have the vocabulary test on the Purim list 4.

Mrs Perles-ELA and Social Studies
This week I saw my first graders turn into true almost second graders. Their reading is amazing! We read a humorous story called Officer Buckle and Gloria. Besides reading this second grade story, they understood all the jokes and lessons to be learned.
We wrote a fun composition called A Trip to Clown School. Again they were able to describe getting on the bus, learning to put on the special fun makeup, wear funny clothes, and learn juggling tricks. They really used their imaginations and wrote cute stories.
We are doing our Flashforward workbooks, reading 2 or 3 stories independently and answering questions. It certainly is great practice in reading and comprehension skills.
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we started addition to 100. We break apart the tens and ones to make it easier to add big numbers. Also working on word problems.
Mr. I.-Science
We reviewed the various organs of the human body in preparation for a test on Tuesday. Students and parents received a PowerPoint review with a detailed description of various organs as well as their structure and function. Everyone will do great!
Second Grade:
Mrs. Spiegel-Judaic Studies
Our funfilled week began on Monday with a trip to the Jewish
Children's Museum where the children were contestants on a game
show, baked matzo and had the opportunity to dress up and crawl in and
out of one of the largest Challah I have ever seen.We learned about
the laws of kashrut which are discussed in this week's Parsha
Shimini. We know for an animal to be kosher it needs to chew it's cud
and have split hooves. The Torah tells us that there are only four
animals in the whole world that have one of the two kosher signs. The
pig, camel, rabbit and badger. No human being would make a statement like
that as perhaps another animal with one kosher sign would be
discovered at a later date.We became familiar with some of the popular
kosher signs we see on various products. We began learning about the
significance of the upcoming holiday of Passover and learned many new
vocabulary words in the process.Shabbat Shalom
Ms. May-ELA
This week in ELA we continue reading Charlotte’s Web and in answering reading comprehension questions. We have been making connections to everyday life with the adventures of Wilbur, Templeton and Charlotte! The students seem to be thoroughly enjoying the animals on the farm and the personifications that each character demonstrates. We are in the process of writing our Opinion Writing compositions which will be a nice addition to our growing portfolios. The students were asked to choose the animal that they wished to be for a day, and express why being that animal would be the ideal choice, but to also choose why it may be difficult; thereby comparing and contrasting the characteristic traits of that animal. Although Spelling/Vocabulary words have been placed on hold in light of working on our Portfolio components and our upcoming play, we have been making note of unknown words, while the students continue to look up the unfamiliar words.
Ms. May-SS
In SS we had our first lesson on researching our Current Event articles in our computer class this Thursday. The students had an opportunity to choose from an array of articles, from different topics, ranging from entertainment to sports to politics! They all chose their article and now they will begin to complete the process of completing it to be able to present them next Thursday.
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we worked on capacity. We are are converting measurements of gallons, quarts, pints and cups.
Mr. I.-Science
In preparation for the science fair, 2nd and 3rd grade conducted a mock experiment to assist them in board preparation for the science fair. Our mock experiment was which brand of popcorn pops the most kernels and students had to form a question, hypothesis, material list, procedure and conclusion. I believe this exercise was instrumental in preparing the students for when they do their own science fair experiments. Now they know the various formats, proper wording and proper layout of of their tri-fold. They just need to do step 3 of the scientific method (doing the experiment)
Third Grade:
Mrs. K.-Judiac Studies
The third grade learned about the different brachot that we say before we eat and the brachot that we say after we eat. The class will be having a brachot bee next week which will give the students an incentive to study the different foods and their appropriate blessings. This week the class reached a new milestone in Ivrit. The students were able to listen to Hebrew being read to them and they were able to translate what they heard. Comprehension exercises are difficult since the text is not in front of the students. In class we speak about training our eyes and ears to recognize and understand the Hebrew language. The students are doing a fantastic job at climbing the "Ivrit Mountain". We will be starting to learn about Pesach next week. Everyone should have a new composition notebook in class by Monday.
Mrs. Shats-Math
This week we finished our unit on capacity and started intensive practice for the state test.
Ms. Regina-ELA
This week in third grade we reviewed the book "moonshot" by Brian Floca and created a summary book to work on the skill of sequencing. Each student had a different page to be responsible for drawing and we created a summary of each page based on an outline created in class. We were avble to take them home to finish coloring.

The fourth graders are getting ready for their Chumash performance which will take place after Pesach break (Date to be announced). The whole class is looking forward to performing in front of their family, teachers and friends. This week we learned about the different brachot that we say before we eat and the brachot that we say after we eat. The class will be having a brachot bee next week which will give the students an incentive to study the different foods and their appropriate blessings. The students learned Hebrew possessive suffixes and how to apply them to words. The class did many writing exercises on the topic. We will be starting to learn about Pesach next week. Everyone should have a new composition notebook in class by Monday.
Mrs. Uzhansky-Math
Fourth grade finished their unit on area and perimeter. We have been reviewing for the state test.
Mr. I.-Science
We continued to review for the NYS state test. To our fourth graders the 2015 test is a piece of cake. I have no doubt all will do well on the NYS exam in late may/june. We will also review the human body for an upcoming fourth grade exam.
Mr. I.-Social Studies
The fourth grade took a test on Monday on American independence and began their unit on US expansion. We will continue with US expansion in the coming weeks.
Ms. May-ELA and Drama
I want to start off by expressing how proud I am of the 4th grade class! They did such a great job on their performance of Sleeping Beauty! They were struggling a little during rehearsals, but they did well under pressure, and pulled off a seamless play This week we have been focusing on practicing for the ELA state test—from answering reading comprehension questions to reading poems and deciphering between literal verses figurative language, to learning how to tackle essay writing; however, the most vital practice that we have been learning is how to take the test. We’re learning test- taking skills and building a tool belt to draw from in difficult circumstances while taking the test.
Additionally, we have finished reading Holes which the children loved and moaned angrily whenthe class Read Aloud was over. The students also presented their Book Talks and did a nice first job on persuading their audience to read their book. Lastly, the students have been practicing their computer skills, and the functions on the keyboard that may help them to write better by italicizing, underlining, indenting, and using quotes when incorporating dialogue.
3rd and 4th Grade cast:
Fifth Grade:
Ms. Regina-ELA
This week we worked on some test prep and idioms for the figurative language in our novel Fish in a Tree. We watched videos that explain idioms and we wrote stories based on the meanings of them. We had a lot of fun with them and realized how many idioms we actually use in our every day lives.
Mr. I.-Science
We studied the various patholgies of the muscular system such as strains, cramps, dystrophy and even Myasthenia gravis. This basically concludes our muscular system unit and we will be moving on to the endocrine system next.
Mr. I.-Social Studies
We are done with chapter 8 which included the study of Mediterranean regions. We started with physical geography of the region and continued to Turkey, made a stop in Isarel and ended with the countries of Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. We will review and have an exam in the near future
Mrs. Uzhansky-Math
Fifth grade finished their unit on angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals. We have been reviewing for the state test.
